Bloat can occur at any time and can be fatal without treatment. If there is torsion (twisting of the stomach) Gas-X is ineffective. For more information about causes, torsion, treatment etc. check out Bloat in Dogs - A Medical Emergency | doghealthdoc.com

Scary symptoms but held off vet visit - dog's fine

I know a lot about physiology (my day job) and I would have rushed to the vet. There are a ton of things it could have been - some of which have no lasting effects and others that cause long term damage, particularly with no treatment to limit the cascade of damage.

    Dog with allergies....Any ideas?

It could be inhaled allergens (atopy). In dogs any allergy will usually affect the skin. Common inhaled allergens include pollen, dust mites and mold. It could be pollen, I live in a similar area to most of Colorado and I have "hayfever" at the moment. It is a bad year here for the late...

    Ear Margin Dermatosis?

For something topical try Kerasolv (entirelypets has a good price $9.90). You want something that mildly strips off keratin plus is a humectant (absorbs moisture from the air). This fruit acids (alpha hydroxy acids e.g. lactic acid and beta hydroxy acids e.g salicylic acid) are...

I feel like I failed him

Are there any musculosketal specialists locally? Here we have one and and I know two dogs, where a general vet said one thing and the specialist recommended something different that made all the difference to the dog. It might be worth asking around and getting a second opinion and at least...

Large-breed puppies (with FCP) needed for study to prevent arthritis

Yes and no. Statistically marginal. However... The grant they got probably has only enough money for 20 dogs. The cost of surgery, follow up etc is not cheap and nowadays most grants are quite small. Plus if it is a preliminary study, then ethically you cannot do a new procedure on lots of...

why do my dogs have fleas when they're on frontline?

My vet said that on big dogs he will sometimes recommend that you put 2/3 to 3/4 of the Frontline in the usual place between the shoulder blades and the rest on the back in the center above the tail. The reason for this is that sometimes the level on the back lower legs and paws the...

    Mast Cell Tumors?

Why do you think it is a mast cell tumor? It is really hard to tell a MCT from a lipoma (or a nerve sheath tumor). They feel the same and sometimes lipomas can grow pretty quickly.

What could be wrong with Bruno?

Think Barb04 gave you some great advice. Something developing so quickly is not usually arthritis. If it is an injury then a painkiller from the vet will help make Bruno comfortable and aid in recovery. Let us know what the vet says.

    Need ideas

How about a spa treatment of some kind? Relax, chat and feel good when done. Lancaster? Buggy ride, olde time pictures - or some local touristy thing that you might not normally do.

    Leaving a dog alone, uncrated?

The rescue organization I got Hank (1 year old ) from told me that he was crate trained and would just go in the crate on command. Ha! Fat chance. There was no way in hell that he was going in a crate voluntarily. Didn't matter what kind of food or treats I put in it. So it sat in the...

    Fish Oil Dog Farts

Lucky you. I have never got a dog to swallow any capsule without jamming them in the back of the throat. They love the fish oil but not the container.

    Itchy!

It is estimated that that 1 in 7 dogs have allergies, so two dogs with allergies is not unlikely. Try the antihistamine, diphenhydramine (Benadryl in the US) at about 2mg per kg and see if it gives Buster some relief - not all dogs are responsive. It won't solve the underlying problem, but may...

    Fish Oil Dog Farts

I use Walgreens fish oil capsules. Good price, often 2 for 1, and USP - and no farts I keep them in the fridge. I bite the end off the gelatin capsule and squeeze it onto food.

    Feeding raw pork.

ravennr Refreezing is fine. It is often not recommend for human food due to the fact that each round of freezing and thawing breaks up the food. It is not a health issue it is an aesthetics issue.

    Feeding raw pork.

Freeze any meat slowly. This does the most damage to any nasty's. Slow freezing causes ice crystals to form. The ice crystals damage cell membranes. Air is a poor conductor of heat so have a much air as possible round whatever you are freezing, so it freezes more slowly.
