Why have both my dogs suddenly started to bark... all the time?

Thanks. That does help. I though it wasn't going right and you guys convinced me I need to learn to give out the treats a bit better. The good thing is that the dogs have learned some things along the way - they aren't "fresh" puppies. They do understand that I will bring back rewards, and...

Why have both my dogs suddenly started to bark... all the time?

Great post. I read it all and will read it a few more times... there was a lot of detail in there. Very, very helpful since it is the exact context of my problem - even I can't misunderstand it. That's just great. Thank you so much!

Why have both my dogs suddenly started to bark... all the time?

What is "quickly" for a dog. One of the problems I realize that I have is that I mistake when "reliability" exists. So, I stop being so vigilant allowing the dogs to make a mistake. Can you give me some suggested timeframes that you would use for training - some minimums so to speak? I like...

Why have both my dogs suddenly started to bark... all the time?

Its not constant, its just more than normal. So normally, throughout the day if my daughter is playing in the other room, Cody (nervous one) ignores the sounds. Today, a little "new" sound would cause him to start barking. Perry on the other hand, seems to be barking more for things he wants...

Why have both my dogs suddenly started to bark... all the time?

Hm.. Ok, I guess I am not doing this right. I am keeping it in my pocket, but the dogs can seem to tell it is there. Every time I go to "set up" the pocket makes a little crinkling sound (from the baggie I keep the treats in) and the dogs perk up. Is this a problem? Would you recommend being...

Why have both my dogs suddenly started to bark... all the time?

I started telling them to "sit" and then give them a treat. It does momentarily distract them, and then they bark again... is it ok to repeat? or will I be teaching them to bark, I pay attention, tell them to sit and then they get rewarded? or am I giving too much forward planning to a dog.

    Bark/yap control for small dog

BTW - that is a really good suggestion. It isn't fool proof, but impressive to come up with and immediate solution. edit: Sorry, I thought "reply" would work to one post... It doesn't. I was referring to the idea of using a blanked on the outside of the kennel to drown out the sound. With...

Why have both my dogs suddenly started to bark... all the time?

Sorry, maybe I wasn't clear. The steps I mentioned that I was doing were the new ways I was trying to train my dogs. I just found this site a few days ago, and have started an entirely different training method based on the advice I have received so far. The dogs are 7 & 8 years old. For...

Why have both my dogs suddenly started to bark... all the time?

Ok, it must be something I am doing. I am trying to retrain my dogs and taking as much advice as I can get. Yesterday I started and got some great ideas which I started today. - Both dogs have been on leashes our outside all day - Both dogs have been given treats for good "sits" and "downs"...

My Dog ate a Bird... and another couple of question

Today went better. They were tethered to me all day, but now they have started barking at absolutely everything. Any ideas why?

My Dog ate a Bird... and another couple of question

Now that I have a bit more time... Thanks so much for all of the replies. My mom was so great with dogs, and I keep wishing she were still around to help me. Having each of you give such great, detailed advice is just wonderful. Thanks. So, it seems as though everything thinks that this...

My Dog ate a Bird... and another couple of question

One more question... I like the clicker thing, but that would drive my husband absolutely crazy. He can't deal with lots of little sounds. (this post makes him sound absolutely nuts, but he isn't any more crazy than I am - not that I am coming off any better!). Anyway, what would you recommend...

My Dog ate a Bird... and another couple of question

Wow great video. So nice to see something work and how it works. That is one of my problems. I know that I am the one that has to learn what to do. So, I have no idea how long it should take when done right or what done right really. Makes it hard to know if I should just keep going or what...

My Dog ate a Bird... and another couple of question

No, not a new problem, and he doesn't exhibit and discomfort in the kennel. He also sees the vet regularly, so I don't think it is medical.

My Dog ate a Bird... and another couple of question

I guess the other question I have is why is my dog going to the bathroom every forty five minutes. If I kennel him, he is fine, if I don't, he keeps sneeking off. Does that ever stop or has it just been too long?

My Dog ate a Bird... and another couple of question

So, it sounds like the consensus is that if the kids leave food around, the dogs will just eat it. They don't jump up during meals, only when we aren't around. During meals they are actually pretty good.

My Dog ate a Bird... and another couple of question

Ok, so I am not a good dog trainer. I love my dogs, but have been screwing up their training for years now (I got both dogs as puppies and they are now 7 & 8). As a result, my husband hates the dogs. I have listened to a lot of bad advice over the years and even hired the help of a dog...
