    Look at this good news

Just FYI: Menhaden is not a fish ever used for human consumption (it's harvested for oil and manufacturing of fish meal), so no "restaurant supplier" would carry this. "Ocean white fish" is not a specific species, but includes a variety of different fish. Restaurant vendors also do not...

    Home Prepared Dog Diets

A message in light of the recent Pet Food Recall: If you have been thinking about finally leaving commercial dog food behind and moving on to better options, but have second thoughts about being able to meet all your dog's nutritional requirements, I have a solution for you: Feeding plans...

    question on foods-Mordy?

Proportions are entirely up to you (the more canned, the better, but I know it's often an issue of affordability), just make sure you cut back on the amount of kibble accordingly so the amount of calories you feed per day doesn't increase. I think the NB Potato & Duck contains around 465 kcal...

    question on foods-Mordy?

I would recommend going with something like the Innova Evo 95% meat cans, Canine Caviar 100% Meat cans etc. Wysong also makes 100% canned meats, Nature's Variety has 95% meat cans but as far as I know they still contain menadione, and Wellness also recently came out with 95% meat cans. By...

Should I be giving more variety?

I don't think variety overall is as important as adding at least some food that hasn't been highly processed. Dry food is just about the most unnatural thing to feed to a dog (I'm not saying all kibble is bad though :)) and I'm not an advocate of feeding a dog nothing but kibble.

Should I be giving more variety?

Adding fresh foods to a dog's commercial food is a good idea. The less processed the additions, the better, and also don't forget to slightly reduce the amount you feed when you add extras, or your dog might gain quite a bit of unnecessary weight. Some suggestions: * egg, either raw or lightly...

    Whole milk?

Here's a thread on milk that will hopefully be helpful. :) http://www.chazhound.com/forums/showthread.php?t=31887

    Turkey.

The worst thing is when I buy tripe, it comes in 5 pound blocks, 4 to a box and I have to repackage it into ~3-4 oz baggies since I don't feed it on a daily basis. Talk about stinky! I'm glad my raw supplier offers a coarse-ground organ blend (liver, kidney, spleen, lungs, trachea, heart...

    Possible allergy..what to feed?

Oh that is too bad. They wouldn't let you buy potatoes and pork in bulk even if it's cheaper to feed than commercial food? :( You could get potatoes for under 30 cents a pound and cheap cuts of pork aren't all that expensive either, especially if you can find a butcher that sells the trim that's...

    Strawberries Toxic!

Yep, I would say so. :)

    Possible allergy..what to feed?

Is there any way you could prepare home cooked food for him? That would not cost you any more than buying commercial food. You could try pork and sweet or white potatoes in a half-and-half ratio and add in a multivitamin supplement after his condition has resolved. That way you can avoid many...

    Strawberries Toxic!

A couple strawberries now and then are not going to harm your dog. A lot of the items on "do not feed" lists are hyped up unnecessarily. :) Some dogs, just like people, can have violent allergic reactions to strawberries.

    Turkey.

Dan pretty much covered it all. :) I always re-freeze, since I buy in bulk and most of the things I get come frozen. My "pet food freezer" is relatively small (7 cubic feet or so?), so I have to repackage everything to make the best possible use of it. The most useful thing to buy when feeding...

    Once per day?

In a normal, healthy, adult dog I see no reason not to feed just once a day if the individual prefers it. Their digestive system is actually designed to handle food that way. If bloat is actually an issue (and frankly, it's more of a genetic/stress problem rather than caused by circumstances...

    Turkey.

The only things people really need to be aware of are that * if their dogs aren't used to a relatively high fat content in their diet, you don't want to feed them any turkey skin, either raw or cooked. Especially for dogs who eat nothing but kibble all year, it can mean tummy upset and...

    Raw Food Diets

I've been feeding raw for going on 3 years and my dog is in great condition. Even my strictly anti-raw vet had to grumblingly concede that he can't see a single thing wrong that would warranty a diet change. :D If you'd liek to read a book that's a true eye opener, have a look at this...

    What is "quality"?

Natural Balanec doesn't have a bad rep at all. It's a nice food, especially as far as what's available at Petco is concerned. The only issue it has become recently is that Bobsk8 is pushing it at every opportunity like he's getting paid for it. lol

    Kirkland Super Premium Kibble?

Spiritus, that ingredient list is long outdated. I don't even know if my current listing is still 100% up to date, but it's certainly more recent: http://forums.dogfoodproject.com/showflat.php?Cat=0&Board=dogfood&Number=31854

    Kirkland Super Premium Kibble?

    What is "quality"?

Right! :) Fresh meat still contains up to 75% moisture before processing, so in the worst case, if a kibble doesn't contain any concentrated form of meat in meal form, you can end up with only around 4-5 oz of actual meat protein in the finished product for every pound of fresh meat that was...
