Classified Adverts Vs. BYB's - which is better or worse?

I'll be honest here, my dog is from a classified ad. The breeder advertised in the paper as there was a bigger litter than expected. I was already looking for a corgi breeder, and called out of curiosity. I spoke to the breeder before ever seeing the puppies, and was happy with what I heard...

funny commands your dogs have learned..

Tom does a weird "command" when it's meal time. I have him go to the kitchen, and instead of spinning 180 degrees around to face me, he does 540 degrees. It's hilarious. And only at meal time. Any other time I tell him to go to the kitchen and he'll just turn around regularly. He runs to...

    Herding breeds people?

I've noticed as Thomas gets older he's less interested in meeting every single person. This is probably just socialization, because he lives in an all-male household, so is mostly just crazy for women and children. I can see him growing out of that, but I still don't think he'll ever be aloof...

What is the strangest food you've ever tried?

Some giant toasted insect, I think they were ants. A college friend from Colombia brought them back one time. Tasted fine, kind-of nutty, and yes, the legs get stuck in your teeth.

    Question for pedigree buffs

Thanks for your answer, DA. This is going to help me to know the right kind of questions to ask the breeders. I really getting the feeling that they're trying to do this right. By all appearances this is a healthy breed, and the concerns there are are all-breed concerns. I'll definitely be...

    Question for pedigree buffs

Thank you for the link, Romy. I have no plans to breed. I just want to make sure I would be supporting the right direction for the breed. There are too many breeds that have crossed the Atlantic only to be ruined here by poor or overproduction. Should I say what breed? I don't want...

Oh man, the mega-chow! How awesome.

    Question for pedigree buffs

Hopefully this isn't an ignorant question, I will try to make myself clear. I would like to get another dog, whether it is next summer or the one after, I'm not sure, but it never hurts to look, right? I've become enamored with a rare breed. A pretty darn rare breed. Probably less than...

Some dog breeds just don't need to be shaved...

I would think that shaving would make your dog a lot more likely to get filthy dirty if it were to roll around in some mud. With a double coat it'll just dry up and fall off, but shaved I would have thought it'd get right down to the skin.

If you take this dog breed selector...

I get Bracco. I even want a pointer and I don't want a Bracco. And goodness, the Munsterlanders aren't the same breed, even. They have different histories, they're just from the same place, and different sizes, hence the name. I don't recall seeing them grouped together before.

    One word

Thomas: hungry All the time! He'd jump through a plate-glass window to get to a single piece of kibble. I thought about ridiculous, too. He can be so weird sometimes. Out of nowhere he'll develop a new hilarious or exasperating favorite activity.

    People against multi-dog homes.

It's funny, my parents had three dogs for a while a couple of years ago, and my grandfather thought it was ridiculous, and was always telling them that three was too many. My mom said that when she was growing up they always had two dogs, no more, and usually no less. I guess my grandfather...

How did you name your animals?

I got Thomas a month or so after moving to Virginia, so I needed a good Virginian name for a good Virginian dog. He's named for Thomas Jefferson. My childhood dog was a mutt that came to our door as a stray puppy. We first named him Black Bear, because he was fuzzy and all black, but he...

Have you ever read an all breed dog book and gone 'WTF!?'

I have a book that has pretty decent, general information, but it does say that Westies "love to travel." Really? All of them? Paris, Tokyo, Cape Town. As a Westie owner, be ready for an adventure. They'll pack your bags for you.

Rollin' with my mixed-breed Lhasa Apso...

I hear "queen's dog" all the time when I go into town. I just say, "not this one." I also get a kick ot of people asking where his tail is. I'm going to start tellng people it's invisible. And that he's magic. I love it when people ask if he's a Welsh type of Corgi. Well, yes...

    Dogs and rain

It rained here pretty good all day yesterday, but still took Thomas for his regular walk. I got a couple of confused looks at the beginning, but then he was all for it. That's the great thing about puppies, they don't know they should be put off.

    Walking/Not walking your dog

I walk Thomas because it makes sense to...we live in a suburb, the roads aren't busy, he meets other dogs and people, he enjoys it and I enjoy it...even this morning in the rain. However, I grew up out in the country and we never walked our dogs. Where would we walk them to? They definitely...
