    High prey drive and cat

Awesome! When she talked about the treat in the closed fist she said that she would give that treat (with the other hand) but I've also heard with the "leave it" command that you shouldn't give the thing you're asking them to "leave" but give them something else instead as a reward?

My name is Chilli. What the heck am I?

Here's my little Mexican street dog. I've had him a week. He's still unsure. :) He's loving our trail hikes together, especially when he chases birds or smells and forgets that there is a human anywhere involved in the equation haha He's got to be part Red Heeler. Looks very Basenji and has...

    High prey drive and cat

Great advice! I checked out that three-part website. Great ideas, but she doesn't really explain how she goes from having the dog ignore a treat in her closed to fist to being able to "throw handfuls of treats" at her dog's chest while the dog maintains eye contact with her. Wish there was a...

    I need naming help.

The first name that I thought of when I saw the pics was "Laika". First dog in space, baby! (ok, that's not relevant haha)

    I'm back!

Yep, that's my boy! His name is Moby, he's maybe 10ish? A rescue. He's a biiig kitty and more of a dog than a cat. :)

    I'm back!

Hi again folks!! So many regulars. :) Looks like I actually signed up in 2008...oh my word. To answer some questions, I have myself a little Mexican street dog. He looks Red Heeler/whippet cross? Looks quite a bit like a Basenji actually. I've had him a week. He's a dear but a bit insecure...

    High prey drive and cat

Hi folks! I searched the training forum and couldn't find an answer to my question. Of course, I'm googling the heck out of it but might as well ask "the experts" :D I have a new adoptee, a 2 year old Mexican rescue who is probably quite a solid mix of various sighthounds. Off leash he chases...

    I'm back!

I'm sure no one here will remember me but I was a regular here 6 or 7 years ago. I lived in Canada, had a GSD puppy named Nova for a short time and then moved to Iceland. Just wanted to say hi, in case there are any "old-timers" here. I'll have lots of questions...I finally have a dog!

    Moving to New York!

My cat moved overseas with me and back. The only cat travel advice I can really give is a) it's probably going to suck for the cat no matter what you do and b) don't sedate your cat if it's going on a flight. It'll be stressed, but that's better than having depressed respiration. Just my two cents!

Maybe I'm just being harsh, but...

Hahhahaha.. that's totally something I would do! Good for you! The really scary thing about cheating in a psych nursing program is that it's really dangerous to not bother learning the material! The cheater we had in our group originally was absolutely terrifying to watch with patients. How she...

Maybe I'm just being harsh, but...

I really have NO tolerance for cheaters! Background: I'm heading into my second year of a psychiatric nursing degree. The program is online and students from the same area of British Columbia are grouped together for clinical rotations. Our group originally had six students. One dropped out...

    Bras!!!

Bummer. I just checked out Spanx and was all ready to make some purchases with their free shipping..then at checkout they add $13 for "shipping and handling" to Canada PLUS $10 for "international handling". Almost an extra $25? Iiiiii don't think so.

    People! Grrrr!

I agree with sassafras. Some people have very strange ideas about what is involved in animal care. Like my friend who routinely let his Pit Bull/German Shepherd puppy run willy nilly around the neighbourhood. When it got picked up by the SPCA and he had to go claim her his response was "Ahh...

Only in Miami.. lol maccaw at the park

Someone here had a bird exactly like that as a pet. They had its wings clipped and left it in their backyard. It came in to us at the emergency animal hospital when it was attacked by a raccoon. In the backyard. Where it was, alone. At 3am. In October. So, while I'm not a fan of exotics being...

I'm such a mess right now... can't stop crying

I'm really, really sorry to hear that. It may have just been one of those freak things, if he had heart problems. Though, drugs tend to exacerbate a whole slew of medical conditions. This must be really upsetting for his newly ex-wife and all his friends. So sorry. :(

    Booze black out?

Oh god. I've only done that once in my life, and it was only because I drank while on a medication that you're kiiinda not supposed to drink on. There was a cool guy from work who invited me and "some people" over to his apartment to hang out and have drinks. Turns out, I was the only one he...

    Mini Hairdresser rant.

A good friend of mine is a hairdresser. The way I hear it, they kinda do what is "best" for your hair/the way it looks whether or not you're in agreement with that. I can see how the hairdresser didn't see much point in taking off half of one centimetre. It probably wouldn't have gotten rid of...

Do you have a regular restaurant?

Typically if I'm going somewhere frequently enough that the waitstaff are starting to remember me, I remind myself that there are soooo many other good places to try. :) But I can definitely understand the lure of good, cheap food. There is one restaurant in town that sounds a lot like the one...
