    What to give for chewing?

Thanks. No I haven't tried bully sticks yet. What size should I buy for her? I get confused with all the options. Also, I have never heard of beef straps. What are they?

    What to give for chewing?

I would love some suggestions on natural chews for my Lab mix. She is 7 years old, about 50 lbs, and a pretty aggressive chewer. I am not comfortable giving her raw bones, or the sterilized bones you see in pet stores. I have also heard that rawhide is dangerous. I used to give her edible...

    Why no Pork?

By Nature has a pork and sweet potato kibble as well. I really like the results I've seen with it; it's in my rotation for my dogs.

    Eggs?

I sometimes give hard boiled eggs to my dogs. They are a really good source of protein. Mine prefer to have me remove the shell, spoiled things that they are :p.

High pH and crystals in urine....

In general, meat lowers the PH and plant foods raise it. My oldest dog seems to be getting increasingly prone to UTI's lately, and I have found it helpful to use a food with a higher meat content. I use PH strips to check her urine at home, and if it gets a little higher than it should be...

Does she *look* thin to you?

The rule of thumb that I was taught is that you should be able to feel the last few ribs, but not see them, and the dog should have a noticeable "waist" when seen from above as in your photo.

    Dumpster Dive for your Dog?

This thread has been a real eye-opener for me. I had no idea that perfectly good things were being thrown away like that. I always thought "dumpster diving" sounded disgusting. I can understand throwing out food that's past the "sell by" date, but why things like electronics and clothes? I...

    My vet was unhappy

It's best to start with something your dog has never eaten before, so he isn't likely to react badly. I would also try to keep it very simple, so if there is an allergic reaction, you have a chance of figuring out what caused it.

    Won't stop licking her toe

She might have gotten a small cut or have something stuck there. Will she let you examine it? I would try the warm water soaks, but if it doesn't start to improve in a day or two, take her to the vet. It might be infected.

Did my dog have a Seizure?

I hope she recovers quickly, and will pray for her.

    Tape worm question?

Dogs can't get tapeworm directly from other dogs, according to all I've read. The eggs need to pass through an intermediate host like fleas, rabbits, or other small animals.

    Multiple Dog Owners Again...

How many dogs do you have? 2 Do you have any pets as well? If Yes, what? yes, 2 cats Where are your dogs being kept? (your room, their own room, living room?) They have access to most of the house. How's the sleeping arrangement? (All in the same room, different rooms, different...

    safe-guard vs Panacur

I use Safeguard. As far as I can find out, it is exactly the same as Panacur except for the label (and the price). For tapeworms I use OTC praziquantel - Tape Worm Tabs. It takes care of all the types of tapeworms instead of just one like Panacur/Safeguard, and only needs one dose instead...

    Bathing dog inside

You can get one that fits over the faucet at a pet store. Or buy one that's meant for people - I got one at Walmart for $8. They aren't that hard to find.

    Cure for a jumping dog?

I also have a lab/border collie mix who used to jump up all the time. What I did was, when she put her paws on me I just backed away so she fell back to the ground. I also avoided eye contact while she was behaving badly. Her response was to eventually start jumping straight up in the air...

    Importance of conditioner?

Well, I'm not a pro groomer or anything, but my dogs' coats are much nicer since I started using conditioner on them. I didn't think it was necessary before since my girls have short hair, but it really has made a difference.

What's Making My Dog Itch (and how do I get rid of it)?

You could just treat him to start with and see if the itching stops. If it is fleas, they will no longer be biting him after the treatment, so it should help even though they wouldn't all be gone at that point. But it might not be fleas at all, in which case there's no need to treat the kittens.

    Help for a friend's dog

I wouldn't add any extra calcium or vitamin D. Innova is a good food and has the right amounts of those nutrients. And, too much calcium can cause the kind of problems this dog has. Without knowing what she was fed before, it's impossible to say whether the problem was deficiency or excess or...

What's Making My Dog Itch (and how do I get rid of it)?

Fleas can be very hard to find. It's easier to find flea droppings; use a fine-toothed comb to go through every inch of his coat and look for tiny dark specks (especially near the base of the tail). If you find any, put them on a white piece of paper and drip water on them - flea dirt will run...

    Help for a friend's dog

Vitamin C might help. I would also feed a good large breed puppy food, as they are designed to promote proper bone growth. It may already be too late to correct her problems, but it's worth a try.
