What about a Lab?

I am looking for a dog that is smart and relatively calm. I don't want a hyper dog. What breeds should I consider? I was thinking of getting a lab. What do you think?

I just lost my best friend in the whole world to kidney failure. He was a beautiful Shetland Sheepdog named Rex. He lived to be 13 years old. He was my best friend and companion. I miss him so much. I found this site on the internet, and I thought I would check it out. Sue
