Im going to buy a dog but need help deciding...

My advice? Get in touch with a rescue and/or your local breed club, both would be more than happy to help you and figure out if the breed is right for you, as well as help locate a dog if it would be a good match. All of those breeds you mentioned are very different and don't fit into every...

    Genetic health guarantee

Did you read my previous post? I remember saying that no breeder can guarantee the puppy can be healthy throughout it's life but will take responsibility if it did happen. If I didn't say that, or didn't say it right, then I guess there it is. I also remember saying not every breeder will take a...

    Genetic health guarantee

Wow, waayy different views, imm, a breeder, should stand behind their breeding throughout the dog's lifetime. I'm not saying they could (or should) guarantee that the dog will be 100% healthy, but setting an age limit of when to take the puppies back? Maybe it's late and I'm not reading that...

    Genetic health guarantee

CT, CMO, von willebrand disease, and cloboid cell leukodystrophy are three examples for my breed. I doubt arthritis would be covered. I will try to PM you tomorrow Momof7 on a copy of a contract/info. Snip-it from one, probably reworded, tho: "To determine if the condition is a...

    Genetic health guarantee

To me, a guarantee doesn't mean that the dog will be perfectly healthy and no conditions would ever show up - to me it means if it DID happen, the breeder would take responsibility (not always taking the dog back, either). Different views on this I suppose.

    Genetic health guarantee

I think that would be a long list to name all congenital and hereditary conditions. Where would you like me to start? Your turn? :)

    Genetic health guarantee

As a breeder, what do you think should be included (for your breed) and excluded?

    Genetic health guarantee

There are some health conditions that, no, a breeder wouldn't be responsible for. So let me rephrase: I wouldn't except anything less that a lifetime guarantee against congenital and hereditary conditions.

    Choice of Spay/Neuter.

So true. But what's the point of having an unaltered dog if it's just a pet? Or if s/he retires from the ring and wouldn't be, like I said, an asset to the breed? Better question would be, if it is just a pet, why take the risk?

    Genetic health guarantee

Sure about that? Because I know a handful that do  They stand behind the dogs they sell, I admire them for that, and enjoy handling for them. Why do you think they couldn't?

    Choice of Spay/Neuter.

I handle, and I see sooo many people with intact dogs saying they would like to breed their male/female... looking at their dog I ask, "Are you joking?" Even a titled dog may or may not be bred, just because it has Ch. in front of it's name doesn't mean it would be an asset to the...

    Genetic health guarantee

Amen!! I wouldn't accept anything but a lifetime guarantee. A 2 yr is almost always worthless and meaningless, especially for my breed where most health conditions don't arise until adulthood (generally 2-5 yrs).
