    Exercise?

I am slowly but surely training for a marathon and I try and run three times a week with my dog. I also do a fitness class twice a week. Dakotah, running is a great way of burning calories. Have a look at c25k.com - it's a 9 week program to get you running 5k by the end of it, and it's really...

Useful website for dog owners going on holiday.

You know how you can search for accommodation that's dog friendly, but you don't always know what you can do with your dog when you get there or what the place is really like? There's a website my friend has just put together which gathers these reviews and puts them on Google maps. When you...

Report into dog poisons around the home now available

Hi all I'm a veterinarian and having just acquired a new puppy, I'm rediscovering how much chewing they do! I've written an ebook on things around the house that can make your dog ill - how they work, how to diagnose, and how your vet may treat them. If you're interested, you can access...

Horrible story at the vet's office!!!!

Skybeemr, what a horrible experience. As a vet, I can see absolutely no reason for those people to treat you with such disrespect. I do hope you've found another vet for your new pup who treats you a lot better!! Sometimes even without a diagnosis, you can look at a pup and get a reasonable...

    Chinese Dog Slaughter Petition

The Chinese, and a few other Asian countries eg Korea, Phillipines are totally barbaric to dogs. They eat dogs, which in itself I don't have a problem with - heck, I eat cows and sheep and pigs and chickens. They believe that an adrenalin surge at death results in tender meat, so they beat...

"Why did they shoot him six times?"

A police dog was stabbed to death here in Aus a few months ago, and the guy who did it was charged with assaulting a police officer. Obviously couldn't get him for murder, but I hope he gets jail time for that. The media does tend to overstate things, but the guy needed to be stopped from...

    What would you do?

Agree with you Fran27, it sounds like she doesn't want to be the one to make the decision to PTS, but by taking it to a shelter, it's out of her hands. Sometimes you need to do the hard jobs when you're responsible for an animal. An even worse thought, what if she took it to the shelter and...

I'm bored and have a busy day tomorrow.

You'll get through, but as bubbatd said, there's a lot on your list and it looks huge. Just one thing at a time, make a list and cross them off as you do them. I always find it feels good to see things getting crossed off. Must be psychological. Thinking of you. Scotia

How often to bath a dog?

Hi Just interested in others experiences. I bath my dog maybe twice a year. Her coat is great, dust just brushes off and she's got no itches or skin inflammation. We use Advantage for flea control. Many people I know who wash their dogs frequently have problems with itchy skin, dry skin...

    Another Oral Hygiene Question

Hi Micro202 From what I've read, the only way to remove tartar is with a scale and polish from your vet, and the best way to prevent it is with raw bones very regularly. From what you've described of her diet, it's all soft, apart from the rawhide. Do you know Tom Lonsdale, of...

    Are the dogs responsible?

Sorry, here's the text of the article.. Warning comes too late July 21, 2006 A MAN whose family's three dogs attacked and killed a young NSW girl has warned owners of other hunting dogs not to trust "the bastards". Four-year-old Tyra Kuehne went missing from her family home...

    Are the dogs responsible?

http://www.couriermail.news.com.au/story/0,20797,19858956-952,00.html This is a terrible article about a 4 year old girl who was killed by 3 hunting dogs. She left her home after dark, wandered past 6 houses to climb two fences and then go into the dog pen unattended. She'd been playing with...

    Interdog aggression

Doberluv, thank you very much for the article. One thing hit home, and it's that aggression is based on anxiety - a residue from her stressful puppy preschool and the attack at the dog park? I've ordered Click to Calm, and will chase up the Jean Donaldson book - I love her work. Thanks again for...

    Interdog aggression

Thanks for the replies. You're right, dr2little, it's more than possible that she senses me tense up when we approach another dog, or when she's off lead and going over to another dog. I'll be watching myself more now. If you have time, could you break it down for me? I'll be checking out any...

    Interdog aggression

Hi I own a 3 year old Australian Cattle Dog, desexed female. We have done puppy preschool as a baby, then clicker obedience classes, agility classes and just recently we've been learning flyball. She's a very fast learner and just loves it. So, theoretically, the training and socialisation...

    Saddest song

"The Living Years" by Mike and the Mechanics. It's about appreciating people when you have them with you, cos when they're gone, they're gone. I always thought it was a real heartstring tugger, but even more so since my Dad died 3 years ago. I find it very hard to listen to now. Scotia

    Mass on neck

Enlarged glands tend to be quite firm, as with us when we've got a cold. If it's gushy, it could be an enlarged salivary gland, if the duct blocks then saliva can't drain out and it becomes enlarged. Either way, pop off to the vet to have it checked. Scotia
