Hi!

I recently adopted a Chocolate Labrador rescue. I am new to dog ownership and wondered how long does a dog bleed when first in heat? She has been bleeding for a week now. It is messy. I am living in a rental home in South Florida and trying to be a good tenant.

Does a dog bleed longer the first time in heat? Is this normal? Is there a way to tell if this is her first time?

Especially would like to hear from TheDeena who I have seen giving good advise around here. Thank you.

Hi, first off I just want to say for education sake, you really really really, should have your dog spaed for their health and longevity in life. If you are not going to mate your dog, you should spay or neuter them. The risk of their getting uterine tumors and breast tumors are greatly increased when you do not spay. We have to be our pets best advocates and therefore we have to consider healthwise what is best for them. The same sort of risks occur for male dogs as pertains to their male reproductive parts. As far as how long they will bleed, 10 days for the bleeding phase and a female usually will not want to mate during that phase but might, usually right afterward. The total cycle goes 2 to 4 weeks, with bleeding usually only 10 days. There are pads and a garment you can buy at the pet store to alleviate your pet making a mess with their heat. MOST IMPORTANTLY, TAKE CARE OF YOUR PET AND DONT BE CARELESS WITH THEM FOR UNWANTED LITTERS.
