Really? I see rough collies on a regular basis. Not so much at dog events, just as pets. Smooth collies much more rarely.
Around here I've only see 2 pet Collies- the one I dog sat, and the one at the park. All the other ones I've seen have been at Rally or Obedience events . Just goes to show what's uncommon in one area isn't so in another! :)

And still adding to my list. LOL

Bullmastiff
Mastiff
Welsh Springer
Cardigan Welsh Corgi

I'm pretty sure I've only met 3 rough collies ever.

I've probably met around 2 dozen shibas, though.

Also, I've only ever met one bloodhound, one blue tick, one redbone mix, never a Black and Tan, and only a few foxhound mixes in shelters that got pulled from the south.

I'd say the most popular breeds here besides goldens, labs, and pits are probably cocker spaniels, doodle mixes, frenchies, wheaten terriers...

Then there are always breeds I don't think of as really common but I see tons of and I have to assume there are local breeders, either that or people just get one because they see them around and it builds up - a zillion westies, for example. Bernese mountain dogs. Havanese. I wouldn't be surprised to see these, but I often see 3+ out and about.

I know quite a few Dogue de Bordeaux, too. I know of at least 5 in my area.

Well I have a smooth coated Chow, lol. But aside from that, my aunt has a precious Alaskan Klee Kai. We have a client at work who does falconry hunting with her Wirehaired Vizsla. We see several Cotons, I once ran across a Black Russian Terrier in Petco (he was not nice. It was frightening) There is at least one Borzoi in town, and Brooks played with an Afghan at the dog park once. My boss has Wolfhounds. We see several Xolos and Chinese Cresteds.

I really like to meet different breed dogs and the dog I saw in France - Basset Artésien Normand. They are not too cute but yes they look good and attractive too.

I have met 2 dogs who were the only examples of their breed in my country so I count them as very rare:
Stabyhound
Portuguese Podengo
I just got a Portuguese podengo. And even rarer I got a black and white one. He's the best most loving funny hugger! Cant believe they haven't caught on here. Would love to find more around

I was recently thinking how I've never met a Japanese chin, yet I've met a stabyhound ....

Rare breeds I've met:
Stabyhound
Dogo argentino
Black Russian terrier
Xolo

Less rare but I think they're rare because I've only met one or two:
Greater Swiss mountain dog
Petit basset griffon vendeen
Irish water spaniel
Neo mastiff
Saluki
English shepherd
Sealyham terrier
Tibetan mastiff
Affenpinscher

I've never met a Japanese chin...not that they're common but seem like they'd be more common here as city dogs. I've also never met a briard...those are all I can think of.
How about a Portuguese Podengo poqueno?

The rarest dogs I've met were a pair of Azawakhs who were regular clients at the clinic I worked for. Unpleasant dogs, but beautiful. My husbands family had a Curly Coated Retriever, though not as uncommon you never see them around here and everyone thought he was a doodle. We currently have a Presa Canario, and they aren't super rare either, but not as common as some breeds you see around here. She is often mistaken for a Cane Corso.

I foster-to-adopted a Chin a few years back. He was from a mill and unfortunately was too ill to be adopted out, so we palliative-care fostered him for the rest of his life. He was nasty, but I wouldn't say that's typical of the breed. I've met two others and they were charming.
