  • Hi all! I’m new to this forum and am just looking for some advice and to see if anyone else has had a similar experience. I just adopted a chihuahua mix from a shelter about two weeks ago. She is 1 year old. We don’t know much about her history. She was housebroken when I adopted her. She walks pretty well on the leash and absolutely loves new people. When we come across new people on our walks, she is the sweetest thing. Not a jumper just wants to cuddle up to you and be pet and fussed over. However, if we come across another dog she just loses it, lunging and barking. I don’t have a problem with her barking but it’s incessant and she does not pay attention to me at all A lot of people have told me not to worry because she is still in a transition period. Some people tell me to discipline her, then when I read up on it it says not to. Anybody else experience this or have any suggestions?

Seems she has had issues in the past with other dogs. You may want to go hang out with other dogs more often and slowly have he get used to them. It could take awhile but I think that's the best way of getting her to clam down around other dogs. Don't discipline her as she may not really know why you are doing it. Just try calming her down when she goes nuts around other dogs. Of course be careful not to get bit.

I agree, socializing is key to this issue. A dog park, or if you can afford it take him/her to a “doggy day care” for a l/2 day every week until she feels more confident and assured.
