Usually my dogs are free. But it depends who i'm taking and how long we'll be there. Nova is i think my only dog that isn't an anxious mess if i leave her alone in the car (such as at a dog event) so i have a crate in there for the other two. But it's more for when we are parked than moving.

If she was just a teeny bit older! I don't know if I could handle another dog under 2. But if the ex takes the cattle dog...

I know of one malinois rescue in this area, so if my ex takes the cattle dog, i'll be shootin' them an email. Heck, the ex was more high maintenance than all my dogs put together, so maybe replacing him with a malinois foster is an even trade lol
