Sorry DanL I didn't realised u posted above me. The thing is I try to hold the treat and let him eat it at the same time, but he won't take it out of my hand unless I'm actually giving it to him. I know where u are coming from and the advice is helpful.. I'll try petting him while he eats...

He already knows leave it, how would I teach him to drop it and to take it? A Coltriever is a Border Collie and a Golden Retriever cross.

thanks for all of the comments.. but the thing is, its not with his actual food bowl.. I read up on this a long time ago and found out that holding the bowl while he eats out of it fixes the problem, I can pet him while he eats out of his bowl, but this time I just gave him a slice of bread...
