Ever since Jack was a puppy he would vomit after drinking. Now he doesn't do it all the time.

Here is when he doesn't: hot or warm water mixed with food, limited water intake. For the limited, i usually count to 10 get him to breathe and then let him drink some more.

Here is when he does: unsupervised drinking. The wather is usually at room temp, and after eating cold snow or a piece of ice. He doesn't do it every day or every week. I just kind of happens in spurts.

I mentioned it to a breeder/vet that I know and she thinks that he has leaves or what not in his stomach. I mentioned this when he was 6 months old. If he had a foregn body I would have thought my vet would have seen something on the radiograph she took when he ate a penny at 7 months of age. He is now 2 years old. He had been vomiting before then.

I plan to talk to my current vet when I take Jack in for his annual checkup.

If you have any suggestions I would realy appreciate it.

I have 2 dogs who do the same thing. They are both related, so I have no idea if that means anything. If they have been outside or away from water and come in they will drink till they puke if I don't stop them. If I interrupt them after a few moments sometimes they will realize they aren't thirsty and stop. Sometimes they will take a few more laps then stop. But if I don't interrupt them..they keep going.

Well at least Jack isn't the only dog that does this. As far as I know none of the dogs that his breeder has does this, and Jack is related to all of them. His breeder has never seen a dog do this before him.

Jillian does it once in a while after drinking a lot fast, and sometimes if any amount of excitement follows drinking.

If it happened as often as you describe, I'd be a bit concerned, but, it sounds like he's probably drinking too fast and likely ingesting some air with it.

Dekka and LoveNewfies, thanks for your replies... I've been trying to figure this out ever since I've known Jack (and I've known him since he was a baby).

He'll vomit up the water all the time - doesn't matter if he drinks fast or slow, or if he's been exercising or not. It's a real hassle for Sada, we're both at our wit's end. It's really bizarre.

I agree. It is driving me batty. I just hope that it isn't something too serious.

Hannah does this as well. We have to limit her water or she'll literally drink every drop of water there is, whether it be 2 cups or 2 gallons. Then the puke comes. She's always done this.

Dekka, a friend of mine has a JRT who will do this excessive water drinking as well. It's like she blanks out and just drinks and drinks regardless of whether she's even thirsty or not. She's actually almost died from ingesting too much water. She started having seizures and was delerious. The vet really didn't know what the cause was, but she can no longer have free access to water.

Wow mine aren't that bad. They only do it if they start off being thirsty, and didn't have access to water. Ie like we go outside to play and when we come in.

I really don't like the idea of limiting water. From everything I have learned you're supposed to let a dog have as much water as they want/need. If I have to limit his water intake I'll do it but I'd rathe not.
