Well I am going back to the vet the second week of January but I just had to post to see what you all thought

well here is the story behind it all before I get swamped with ppl thinking im a bad breeder.

My mom saw a beagle on the country road that leads to our driveway on Nov 20 but when she got out of the van the beagle took off into the woods. so our whole family was on lookout.

Well on Nove 25 I found her up by the highway curled up freezing cold. just shivering and o so skinny and dehydrated. Well upon getting her home I noticed how swollen and messed up looking her vulva looked. (you know the way it gets after constant breeding) Well my vet verified it was the end of her heat and that he said she most likley was bred.

now she looks like she came from a puppy mill or at least somebody that bred her often. So here it is now almost a month later..and sometimes im like.. yeah she is.. other times im like.. mm maybe Im just feeding her to much:confused:

The vet aged her at 6 years old. she had never been in a house so she was not house trained. she didnt know how to walk on a leash.. and she has no responce to whisles or anything. She is now house trained and sits on command.. can walk on a leash. but she still does not come when called though we are working on it

anyways if she isnt pregnant she wil be spayed pronto and if she is she will be spayed later. We get alot of dumped dogs but I have really fallen for her. So I am not sure if she is permanent or if when all is said and done she wil lfind a forever home like so many others. I have three poochies of my own plus 5 other dumped dogs right now. so I will not say what tomorrow holds.

Ok this is Nutmeg a couple days ago

She's pregnant IMO...in fact, I would bet money on it from the pics. Right now is the time to give her lots of love and care and the BEST possible nutrition. Poor baby...so glad someone found her:(

she sure looks pregnant to me. I'd put money on it. And my guess is she's not "just pregnant" either, she's prolly gonna have some puppies in a few weeks. I'd get ready if i were you.

I agree she's pregnant. Now your first decision is whether or not you want to abort the puppies. If you keep them make sure you have enough money to feed them and pay for vet care for mom and pups and have some in case of an emergency C-section. Also be sure you can find them all good homes. If you can do all that then just make sure you get her a whelping box and start her on a high quality PUPPY food (if you want we can suggest brands). Just give her lots of care and you might want to go out and get a do thermometer so you can know her normal temperature to compare to when you think she is going into labor. I'm no expert on puppy care so I'll leave that to one of our breeders, I believe we actually have a Beagle breeder here. Kudos to you for taking this poor girl in and for being able to stop her misery, I can only imagine what she's been through.

Firstly, Well done to you! Those pups and thier mom are in good hands now!
She looks like she's very nearly due from those pics and I wouldn't be surprised if they came in the next couple of days.

First, get a whelping box, they're sold in most pet stores, if you cant buy one, they're easy to make also.Just make a Wooden box big enough so your bitch can stretch out laying with a bit more space, and you MUST put a pole around the sides, so Mom doesn't squish her pups.
Has She been laying or sleeping in one particular place? This may be where she chooses to give birth, and sometimes there not the safest of places, One of my golden's took a liking to the airing cupboard!
So gradually make her sleep in the whelping box and praise her or give her a treat whenever she sleeps there, this will encourage her to go there for labour.
And the whelping box Should, no MUST be near a heating lamp. The biggest killer of puppies is lack of heat.Think about it, Its at least 100 degrees, in the womb, and it may be less that 40 when the puppies arrive.

Second, Buy some puppy food, and mix some in with her food, this helps the pups and Mom.Keep this feeding up until you Wean the puppies off Nutmeg's milk. Then, the puppy food is just for the puppies.

Make sure the bitch doesn't have too many visitors during the week before and a few weeks after the whelp, this is a stressful time for the bitch, and hyped up visitors wont help her.

And most Importantly, Call the vet just to let them know while she's in labour, incase something goes wrong, she could have bred with any dog out there, and she may need a c-section.Have you seen the vet already? Did they give you any clues of the size of the litter?

Good luck! Pm me for questions!

Be aware that she is a smaller dog...if she was bred by a LARGER dog you could have a major life threatening issue when she whelps those pups. PLEASE get her x rayed...IF you can see spines then you know she is at least 45 days along and perhaps more.

Just to give you some scale the following two pics are of bitches of mine late in pregnancy...both whelped 4-5 pups, the red bitch had a water puppy which resulted in a c section :

Poor dog, she looks like she suffered a lot in the past, she defenly looks like she scaped from a mill.

I'm glad she's with a good owner now.

I agree with you.

No one knows for how many time she was wondering in the street, so If she got pregnat by a dog like the size of a GSD she can get killed 'casue the puppies can crush her from the inside if they are too big

She definitely looks pregnant. Poor girl..she looks a lot older than 6 years to me, but maybe she has just been through a lot. You're such a nice person for taking her in and taking care of her.

thanks everyone. sometimes I look at her and im like..yep.. other times im like nah!

I have had experiance in whelping before. (three dogs) We live in the country down a long country road that leads to our driveway and we get "blessed" all the time.. Im thinking of hanging a sign that says..if its puppies put them in this box over here. If its an adult there is a leash over there. and then asking them to right what breed/mix it is. and any health issues that come with the dog.

I doubt it would work though.

this is however my first "small" beed.

Dont worry she wouldnt be due until the end of january b/c when I found her Nov 25 she was at the end of her heat.

I shared my concerns with m,y vet about the sires possibly being to big. He wil be on call. and I shouldl know for sure as well as more info when he looks at her again in early Jan.

I have rehomed over 23 puppies to homes and I keep in contact with all of them. and if anything should ever go wrong they come back to me. I have had two puppies returned to me. I am a no nonsense person when it comes to adopters..

I cannot get her to eat dry dog food.. though when i do give it to her she tips her bowl then finds any artical of clothing from around the house and noses it over and covers the food. so I have been giving her Pedigree canned. b/c it is the only canned I can find in my lil town that is better than Alpo or storebrand.

though I bought a bag of kibbles and bits to see if I can entice her to go for the dry because its softer than Iams.

Maxy 24. My vet didnt even offer to abbort b/c he knows i do not stand for any form af abortion. ..though I would like to find her previous owners and...

goldendoodler ..she likes to sleep 24/7 exept when she is outside with me. but the second she is inside ..she finds the nearest couch..or her favorite (my bed) and snoozes..and she snores!

I think her food burrying and oversleeping comes from living in a cage. and having to fight for her food.

HoundedByHounds wow your girls look big! she doesnt look like that at al when she stands. she just looks big when she lays down or sits. they look so happy!

It has been 34 days since I found her.

We think we may have found the previous owners. there was an ad about a breeder moving and she need to get rid og all her beagles. she had I think 5-6 females. and some puppies. she was moving and needed to sell her odgs. SO we called and she asked us what we emailed her and she responded asking us what we were looking for in a puggle. Now we had asked her for pics of her female beagles. we re emailed her and asked again about the mothers.. she never responded.

I will keep you all posted.

Please look up the book ....very cheap at Amazon ....

will do :) I think I have it. I reconize the name I will look through my boxs of books. If I dont hve it I will buy it. We have a small book store in town and If I dont order it online they can order it for me.

when I was young I thought it would be fun to breed dogs. then when I was 14 and I got my first dumped dog. who was a month pregnant. she was a shepherd mix. I watched a man just leave her in the snow. I learned all the wonderfull cons of raising puppies. then there went that dream.
since I was young I always wanted to be a vet/ Wildlife rehabilitater. and close to getting my liscense for wildlife rehab. when I get a few things in my life settled I will be going to college to become a vet. for right now the only thing I let breed around my yard is Sheep goats ducks geese and chickens.

My sheep is due March 12 and my goat I rescued is due May 23. The Goats name is Destiny. She is a walking miracle. what my vet calls a miracle. he said she needed to be put down the day I got her. its a long story. Ill tell it if you want. :)

If she's not eating all that well then please offer her a hard-boiled egg daily to help keep up her nutrition. Pedigree won't cut it!!!

will do :) since I am her :) I changes my email awhile ago and I havent been on here since b4 I moved. so I got a new nic to go with my new email.
but if your refering to my dog giving birth. awhile back when my family had a crisis and was cheated out of the land we bought by friends and had to rent a place and couldnt bring our dogs inside. And My baby love had a silent heat and got pregnant. and I was tore up on this board for it b/c she wasnt spayed. then that is the only puppies you know. since then like I said my family worked our buts off and we moved to a diffrent place in Mo and we have been here for about a year and in that span we have had lots of dumped dogs cats. and even a chicken. I named her muffin. but if you cant let bygones be bygones than thats your choice. but I wasnt the one freaking on a 16 year old who had no control of what her parents did. didnt have a job to get her dog spayed if she wanted it. and yet you knew my age you insulted me you assumed alot so I was diffensive b/c I wouldnt admit that at the tiime we were to poor to do what you required me to do to be welcome here. . I may have been chewed up and spitten out. but im back. why b/c Im not a baby. and I have a job now and I have nothing to hide. and b/c I know that behind alot of the user names there are real ppl with hearts that want to do what they feel is right.
