Aussie Breeder Help?

I'm having the worst of luck trying to find a breeder that doesn't: Only test males, have toy and mini aussies, or has a "Ch" in front of the dog's name.




Can anyone help? Working breeder. In the Southeast, willing to travel to GA, MS, TN, SC and FL.

Hmm... have you considered Aussie rescue? The breed is VERY common in shelters and rescues, simply because like Border Collies, most people cannot handle the energy and intelligence. I know several people who have adopted wonderful Aussie puppies and adults. Are you planning on working/breeding/dog sports?

If not... why are you against a dog with a CH? If you can find a good breeder that works their dogs AND shows them, what's the problem? There are some nice breeders out there that breed for working ability as well as conformation. With BCs, yes, an AKC CH is very...taboo with working enthusiasts. But that is because the Border Collie is bred for their working style solely. I don't feel the same about Aussies getting a CH, even though I can't say I'm a fan of big, floofy show Aussies. There is a nice medium in the breed, though.

Also, why are you against breeders who also have Mini Aussies? I understand being against Toy Aussies, but there are some very nice Mini Aussies out there.

I think the best place to look for working breeders is probably going to be ASCA herding trials... I would say trials in general, but, those tend to be dominated by BCs. Have you checked out this list? http://www.asca.org/Finding+an+Aussie/Breeders+Directory

I can definitely empathize with you. When I was considering a working Aussie puppy, I was shocked by how difficult it was to find good breeders. Just, shocked. It took a lot of prying, and work, but I did find some fantastic local breeders who I was able to meet. The thing I noticed... most working breeders do not have a need to advertise. People who actually own working dogs, and produce litters, often keep puppies and might sell a few to other local ranchers. Their pups are typically in very high demand, locally.

Actually I think I know of a breeder in either GA or Alabama that has Hangin' Tree lines; my training mentor met him and his dogs. Said they're not that pretty but boy do they work! She's supposed to call me back sometime here for something else anyway, I'll try to remember to ask her who the breeder was again. They're got a website somewhere, I just can't remember it.

Have you tried the Aussie forum? There are some working dog folks on there. There is also an area where there are listings for breeders regionally on the forum. Even if you don't find it in the listings, they are a nice bunch of people and would be able to direct you to someone locally, since not everybody is on the internet. (Poor non-internet people....don't know what they are missing.)

i can get you the name of a great aussie lady in missouri who does herding with her dogs. i don't know how much breeding she does, but she might be able to refer you to someone else.

You might do a search on Los Rocosa lines (hartnagles) as well. Hanging tree are nice working dogs.

I'm not really familiar with breeders in your state, but 'dual titled' dogs which there are MANY breeders that do this, are the way to go in my opinion.

I'm all for the rescue options Zoom posted, I also have an arph dog as well as "fluff" dog who is out of alot of HOF dogs..HOF is Hall of Fame dogs that have produced multi titled dogs.

The lines I tend to look for are: Hangin' Tree, Las Rocosa and Slash V at the top of the list anyway. There's one other one..oh Calais/Colorado...it's some odd split between kennels, not exactly sure what the deal is, but they breed back and forth between each other all the time...lots of LR dogs in their lines too. I'd steer clear of a dog that has recent Briarbrook or Bayshore lines, they've gone total show fluff...four or five gens back, you could get some ok Briarbrook dogs though.

I've got a reserve spot down for a puppy from Ad Astra Farm here in Kansas...heavy on the HT lines, tend towards the blue merles over the reds, which I like. The one thing about the LR is that they really love their red dogs! At least they keep the deep, vivid reds and don't have too many "washed out" red merles like many of the show dogs I've been finding. of course, color is secondary to a good dog, but everyone has their preferences.

I'm also attempting to join Aussieboard, but having trouble getting the confirmation email.

The board itself is pretty slow, nothing like Chaz, but there are quite a few Aussie people on it and they do seem to check fairly often. If I remember correctly, it took me a little while to get on there too.

Zoom, I have looked at Pincie Creek, it's only about 40 minutes away from me. But they don't health test their females from what I saw, only the males? lol

If you're wanting a show dog, she might be good, but it doesn't sound like she's concentrating much at all on herding ability and if I read Lizmo's OP correctly, her friend is looking for a working Aussie.

Yes, the reason I recommend working over showing is because of price. They don't have thousands to spend on a pet for their son. They definitely have the means to care for the dog and it will get the best darn socializing possible.

On that Aussieboard, there are a handful of people who either have or know of a couple of show/working cross litters...might also be a place to consider.

Hmmm...if they are just looking for a pet for their son, is a working line Aussie going to be happy in that environment? Won't the dog be too drivey? I would think show line Aussies would accept "pethood" better? lol!

By the way, not all show breeders sell pets for thousands of dollars. Most larger breed pet quality puppies are about $1000 from show lines...
