My mom grabbed two from Wal-Mart today--it was so thoughtful and sweet of her--but I'm not entirely convinced of how safe it would be to let him chew on them, as the rawhide inside is ground up. Most of the pieces I can see are quite small, about the size of your average dried parsley flakes.

I'm still keeping the two she bought--I think they'll be a really fun high-value fetch item for training/playing, but I'm just not sure if I feel safe letting him have a go at them, even if supervised.

you don't want to use them for training, especially fetch...i don't know about the quality, does it say chemical free on the package?

I wouldn't, unless it says somewhere that they are the compressed rawhide... it also depends on what kind of chewer Middie is.

I agree.

I would never give something like that to my Dixie because of the kind of chewer she is. Bear however would be fine with it. He takes his good 'Ol time and chews everything before swallowing. Dixie might try to swallow the whole thing.

That's not something I'd buy for my dogs, but if someone gave me one, I might let one of them try it, under careful supervision. My general rule is no rawhides or choo hooves.

Oh... I didn't know that, Smkie. I don't think it says that on the label. Should I be looking for that in all rawhides?

I was thinking about it today and am not sure I really want him chewing on them.. since it's just a teensie little layer of rawhide over the compressed chopped-up stuff...... and those rawhide threads.. probably too much of a chance something wold go wrong, even with supervision. And with what Smkie said, I think I'm going to look much closer at rawhides...
