PARVOVIRUS - PLEASE take serioulsy!

Hello Everyone,

We just wanted to share our experience with you in hope that we can prevent or help anyone whose puppy contracts the Parvovirus.

We purchase our Olde English Bulldogge (11 weeks old, 11 pounds) on Wednesday September 5th/07, that Friday he started to look sick. I called the Vet and asked them if there was anything I could do, and gave them the symptoms he was showing at that time. They had us rush him over and examined him on the spot. We where told it could be a cold or stress from bringing him home and to see how he did over night and bring him back to the vet. From 6pm that friday to 11 pm he drastically declined (he could not keep food or water down) vomiting and diareah (he looked really sick). We rushed him over to the Emergency Hospital and they tested him for the Parvovirus (It came back positive). He was immediatly taken into ICU for agressive treatment. He fought really hard for Four days until he got fluild into his lungs. His heart rate was around 240, you could not touch him from the amount of pain he was in. So he would not suffer anymore we decided it was the best thing for him to put him down. As painfull as it was to do this we know it was the best thing for him, and the reality was this Virus got the best of him. We caught early but this Virus is not something to joke about. Watching how fast it him and how drastically he declined we want to make people aware of what can happen and to have there puppies tested ASAP. Also to let you know 4 days in ICU cost us $3000. CAD it is not cheap.

He gave us 2 1/2 days of joy, and in return we gave him love and all we could do to try to save him.

Parvo is a very devestating disease, I'm so sorry you had to go through that. Where did you purchase Corona from, if I might ask?

I'm very sorry for your loss. Parvo is a horrible thing and very costly to aide a pup through. You have my condolences.
I would suggest contacting whoever you got your pup through and letting them know and doing what is necessary to make sure it never happens again.

sorry for your lost. i bet your dog is happy having a master like you. My dog sam died also 7 months ago... I miss him... sigh.

Oh poor you! I have never experienced the virus here in NZ, never heard of it happening but I'm sure it has. And even vaccinations aren't guaranteed, from reading on that link.
My dog's twin brother is named Corona, and the name's not common, so that makes it worse. Hope you're ok...

Sorry to hear about your loss.
We havn't had to experience it yet, we're we have raised our las few dogs we were super vigilant because we knew one of the dogs that strayed form its yard a lot probably died of parvo and used to pee on our fence a lot, plus a friends used to live next door and said they woudln't get a dog as there was parvo in their yard.

Our lot never touched our backyard untill a couple of weeks after their second injection.

I'm so sorry... I can't imagine how devestated you must be. Poor little guy.

I am also curious where you bought him from, and if his breeder is taking any responsibility? If he was sick within 2 days, it's very likely that he had Parvo with his breeder.

This is why I CRINGE when I see barely 8 week-old puppies at the dog park. Pups should be kept in completely safe environments before they have completed their shots. =(

i would also check and see if there's a puppy lemon law in your state and if that will help at all.

I would not get a puppy again while you live at that house. An older, vaccinated dog, yes, but not a puppy

I realize this is an old thread, but obviously they pop up and I'm sure it will be read...

I disagree with this statement. We went on to raise two more puppies after Buddy had parvo in our home and they are parvo-free.

We cleaned the heck out of EVERYTHING with bleach and destroyed what we could. It's unreasonable to tell someone that you suggest they never get a puppy again in their home.. what if that is their home? where they plan to live for the rest of their lives? Ridiculous to the say the least.

Yes, parvo should be taken seriously, without a doubt, but life can go on afterwards in the home in which the pup got sick!

I'm really particular about Sadie being around other dogs. I won't allow anyone to bring their dogs/puppies over unless they are up to date on all vacines. Sadie is vacinated, but you never know. Better safe than sorry. I think most of our friends think I'm too particular with it, but Sadie's health and well being is more important to me.
