Anal Glands

I should know the answer to this , but I really don't. What is the anal gland for, and how often should it be expressed?

It's a dog's way of saying "Hey I was here" and hopefully never :lol-sign:
A dog with a great digestive system (Read perfect poops) and no anal gland defect will express as needed as they have bowel movements.
