We were playing with a ball today and while trying to catch it (I just bounce it around lightly) he ran straight into a wall.

He was crying and came running between my legs, withought putting one of his hind legs down at all.

I picked him up, layed him out on the bed and gently ran my hands over the leg. He didn't pull away or cry. I bent it (very gently and slowly mind you) and there was no whimpering or crying or pulling away. 10 minutes later, he is still limping quite badly.

Should I take him to the vet? Or will he walk it off...?

:(

I wouldn't go rushing to the vet if it was my dog, but if he's still limping by tomorrow morning I'd certainly take him in.

Slow, easy walks and crate rest should help. Border collies are pretty resilient, and sometimes just sleeping seems to heal them.

Okay, thanks.

I am so paranoid it's awful, lol. He has such long legs! I know it's not really my fault, but I still feel guilty :(.

Oh I know, I worry all the time about Eve's deer legs! lol. She's going through that weird growth spurt where she's all legs with very little muscle mass protecting those bones and joints, so I'm paranoid that she's going to stumble one of these days and get a fracture or sprain something.

Heal fast, Spy!

I know! It's like he has some sort of spider thin, boney legs. Most of his puppy fat is gone and so he looks dangerously frail.

Okay, I am going to put lots of cushiony blankets in his crate, and stuff several kongs.

I'll just take him out for a bunch of potty breaks.
We trained and did a little walk earlier, so he should be okay excercise wise.

Thanks for the suggestion Grammy!

I hope he feels better too :(.

I just let him out to pee and he wouldn't put his leg down :(. Though, once he started walking (he trots everywhere) he put it down and the limp didn't seem to bad.

*sigh*

Ditto Grace. I hope Spy gets better soon!
I think a lot of us are very paranoid (myself included ;)) but don't fret unless it persists. I would say give him a day or so and if it's not better go ahead and go to the vet.

Okay, well tonight he came out of his crate for a while. The first 15 minutes or so he would barely put the leg on the ground.

Now though, it seems quite good. Minor limping and he doesn't seem to care that much. I think by tomorrow afternoon (in the morning I'll imagine it'll be worse because of stiffness) if it's like this I'll not go to the vet :).

Thanks everyone with the suggestions and well wishes. I'll let you know how he feels tomorrow :).

Sorry, Spy. :( Get well soon!

So they grow out of this all legs, clumsy, frail stage? It's kind of funny looking when Nala runs right now, almost like a fawn learning to walk. :)

She runs into things a lot when she's running around with Herschel. Twice she's hit something hard and ran back to me yelping but I know she's just being dramatic. I pet her a few times, give her a praise, and then I pretend nothing happened.

Spy decided today that his leg wasn't huting

So looks like everything'll be fine :D.

Thanks again guys!

LOL Herschel! I don't know if Spy will. He is very coordinated (in general, lmao) and his dad is very lanky. I suppose I'll just have to wait and see!
