I know I'm gonna mess up the joke by saying this but there are significant coat colour differences between the west and east which are a great way to tell.
East Siberian Laika's look a bit more like the Russo European Laika of the Karelian Bear Dog, with the exception that unlike the two afore mentioned breeds, they can have bits of brown in there coat, whereas the others are black and white.
The West Siberian has more of a sandy coat colour or light browns (I forget the actual colour name) however black is seldom if ever present.
