If you were a person that needed a dog that truly did everything what breed would you pick.

You need a dog that would herd, retrieve game, hunt and track, Search and rescue, watch dog, guard dog, pull a sled, frisbee, guard against predators, therapy dog, companion, and any other function I left out.

What would it be?

Which breed is the closest thing to a "Jack of All Trades"?

Border Collies. They can do nearly everything. Amazing, versatile dogs.

Farm-bred German Shepherd, with Border Collie in close second. My only concern with the Border Collie is their size. Even if they have the will to protect (not a quality that's purposely sought after in the breed, but one that seems to be there anyway), they're not big enough to take on larger predators.

Samoyed is the first breed that comes to mind. They're gorgeous, sweet natured (the well bred ones) great at sled pulling, and can be great agility dogs. I'm sure you could easily teach one to do a frisbee, they have very high prey drives so hunting wouldn't be difficult (and I'm not sure how they'd be at retrieving)...The Sammi people bred them specifically to be all purpose dogs, and to this day the working lines still are. They are good "cart" dogs, too!

I'd be concerned that a Fila would find agility and obedience boring. :D

A breed that first came to mind and closest to your description in AKC would be a male St. Poodle. They're easily taught to herd, track and hunt. Great retievers and at search and rescue. The males rather good at protecting their home when owners aren't home. And they are wonderful therapy dogs. (Don't know about sled pulls?! They're lacking the conformation, power in hind quarters to do serious pulls. Otherwise, they're a rather versatile breed.

I was thinking Malinois.

Renee...Do Filas retrieve?
Mine will bring me things when I ask. Even if they really, really, really want to eat it. And that's completely untrained.

I've thought about doing some agility stuff with them. Their version of obedience is different from the standard, unquestioning obedience work, but that kind bores me, too, lol!

They are meant to be an all-purpose breed.

I was thinking the other day if I was trapped in some deserted place what dog would I want with me, and I decided on a Siberian Huskey for stamina and hunting ability.

standard poodles make GREAT weight/sled pulling dogs, actually, i've heard.
