I have a 2 year old lab and cannot believe the hair!!!! :yikes: :yikes: I try brushing him but it is endless. I can brush for hours and it just doesn't stop, I heard that labs shed but I never realized this bad!! Is there a special comb i can use? Or any products you can guide me to?

Thanks in advance!!!

I've heard the furminator is good http://www.furminator.com/, or old razors (I don't really know how that works so someone else will have to help you with that). Does he fear the vacuum? They have those vacuum attachments that let you suck the hair off, I don't know how well that would work though. The furminator looks like it would work though. Plus it's summer so he may be shedding his winter coat now.

yeah, also, make sure he's on a good diet, that will help. Those brushes they use for horses, not a curry comb but one of those metal ones with teeth one side and smooth on the other, it's like a loop, i forget what it's called...

It's a shedding blade :) They don't work as well as the curry comb, I have a dane/lab mix who sheds like crazy, I could only imagine how much he'd shed if he were on a purina diet :yikes: I've tried the blade and find that it doesn't work like the curry comb. The fur flies with the curry comb... :)

^^^I agree. I have a hound with very short hair who sheds like crazy. I just use a rubber horse curry comb. It cost me $2 at the local feed store.

I give him a vigorous brushing outside, and the thing gets of TONS of hair. Diet may also help, but I believe labs are notorious for being very heavy shedders. I think frequent brushing is the key. Good luck

Manni is a 5 y/o yellow lab and WOW can that dog shed. If we don't vacuum every other day the fur will take over the house. My next dog will definitely be wire-haired!

Our Doberman and our Rottweiler shed quite a bit also. I use a curry comb on both of them, and also use a regular metal comb on Morgan (the Rottie). Both get tons of hair out, but they still shed a lot. Furminators are alright, but they don't seem to work overly well for dogs with Lab-like coats.

Diet definitely plays a role as well, as others have said.

funny, my lab doesn't shed as much as you all seem to be experiencing!! She has a "good shed" twice a year, but otherwise she has minimal shedding. I feed Canidae--think that has anything to do with it?

how do you think I feel, I have Chloe the GSD/Lab..and she eats Innova EVO and STILL sheds like crazy....
 I used to think Missy sheds really bad, but she did better when I switched to a higher quality food, and now Even Better now that they're on raw.
But then I started dog sitting 2 labs and holy cow, its a constant year-round thing! I think they'd do better on a higher quality food, though. Their coats are kind of coarse - is that normal for a lab? The only labs besides those ones, that I've put my hands on, are puppies... and of course they're very soft..?

I have 3, and they manage to all blow their coast within a week of each other. One will blow his coat, right when he's done the other will start and so on...hehe...they all shed like crazy though, brushes here are like gold ;). I also feed Canidae, and wonder what the shedding would be like on a yucky diet.

Lab coats do tend to be coarse IMO, although a good diet helps with that. Also using moisturizing shampoo helps (Daisy's coat is always softer after a bath). Daisy is a lab mix and sheds like crazy in the spring/summer but only sheds a little in the colder months.

How to stop the shedding

Our yellow lab passed away in December at 11 1/2 years old. Anyway, she was such a terrible shedder that I now have a Goldendoodle and get my standard poodle puppy this weekend. On lunch break I would take off my pants so I could go back to work not covered in hair. It was in the remote control, chairs, lamps EVERYWHERE!

Finally someone told us to have her shaved down at the groomers. It was incredible and stopped about 70% of the shedding. The more we did it, the longer it took to grow back. Its the ONLY thing to do.

I love labs, but will never get one again because of the shedding. I now have a dog that can ride in the car etc with no hair on anything, and I love it.

Good Luck.

Do you have any pictures of your Lab shaved? How long does it take for the hair to grow back? I have never heard of this before!! but it sounds like a great idea. I love the dog but this is just out of hand with the hair, I mean with out a lie I can brush for an hour and for that entire time there will be tons of hair coming out!!!

labradors perpetually dribble hair tis a fact. I have lived with them my whole life and a good vacuum is a must. THe hair is secondary to the joy they will bring to your life, you just get use to it.

It's generally not a good idea to shave your dog down. The fur is an insulator from heat and cold. I don't think it would be a great idea to shave a dog down that already has a short hair coat.
