I have been researching Presa Canarios and I would like the Chazers that have had experience with them to share what they know. You don't have to include the basic stuff you can find with a google search, I am more looking on personal experiences with them.

Opinions are welcome I am not just looking for text book facts.

Weeeelll. You asked for it.

My loopy neighbour had two presa pups when we first moved here. She kept one and the other went to live with the daughter. Both are incredibly sweet natured dogs, great with children but protective of their boundaries towards strangers and other dogs.

The two sisters when together will occasionally have an all out bitch-fest but it sounds and looks much worse than it is. It tends to last a minute or two and then it's over - everybody as they were, no skin broken.

Elfa recently had to cope with the introduction of a poodle puppy. She was relatively cool about it but until today is not at all warm with the little dog. But then, neither am I. It's spoiled rotten, mama's baby, whereas this huge beautiful beast cannot be picked up and snuggled.

Elfa visits my house, She ignores my cats, sits politely with Skye for treats and knocks over everything in sight with her tail. I haven't ever had to tail-proof my house as Skye had hers docked before I ever got her. Now when Elfa drops by I have to run around picking things out her way.

My personal experience of Presas, right here in the Canaries where they originated, is that they are powerful, impressive dogs, deeply loyal, affectionate and protective. From those I've met I see that they can be reserved with strangers, though Elfa if someone is invited into her house as opposed to loitering in 'her' park, will greet everybody with a lethally whipping tail and a present. Usually a shoe which she presents to you at the door.

Elfa is a cracking dog and I would have her myself in a red hot minute if the neighbour ever decided to part with her.

I have never met one unfortunately but I LOVE THEM! I want one sooooo badly. Maybe some day when I have more experience with training and don't have so many dogs.

They definately have a bad rap, that's for sure. If you mentioned that breeds name around my parts you'd get people talking about the two that mauled and killed a lady in San francisco. BUT you can find reports of all kinds of breeds doing all kinds of bad things. Like the 100's of threads here have said...it's usually the owner that turns a dog bad.

I personally think they are a beautiful breed! We had one come to my work to stay and he behaved alot like your run of the mill pitt. Happy (with an exceptionally destructive tail), goofy, major selective hearing :) , very social but was not one to back down in a fight.

I found a pic of one as a pup...look how squeezable those paws are!!

We actually have a member on here who is a breeder of Presas and a very good friend of mine! She has been busy lately but I am sure that if you PMed her she would be more than willing to help you out! I'm pretty sure her username on here is Geisthexe I will at least try to find her kennel website though so you can e-mail her. She is an incredibly smart woman and always willing to help. Just tell her Ren sent you ;) Was it you that is planning on going to the UKC Premier next week in MI? If so both her and I will be there and she will be bringing some of her gorgeous Presas!!!

ETA: I found her website!!! My <3 dog of hers is Drago! I friggen love that guy! http://www.vigilantkennels.com/news.php

I might be going...still not sure. If I go it will just be that Saturday. I couldn't find a reasonable hotel with in 45 miles west or south of Kalamazoo...so I would just drive there real early and drive home afterwards. 4+ hours each way. I also have some family events that are pulling at attention for that weekend. I might not decide until Friday... lol.

I have seen her website, I'll drop her a line.
