About a month ago, my wife and I got a Maltipoo puppy from a breeder and at the same time my good friend and his fiance got my puppies sister.

Right now they are 14 weeks old and they are the best of friends. My wife works 3 days a week (sometimes on weekends) so on the week days that my wife has to work, they get to play together all day. I am glad that my friend and I chose to get them together this way my Milo gets to grow up with his sister, always has a playmate, and I don't feel as bad leaving him to go to work (they play together anywhere from 1-3 times a week depending on my wifes work schedule..they play on the weekdays that my wife and I are both working).

My question is...my dog is a male and my friends is a female and my dogs sister from the same litter. We ARE NOT BREEDING them and BOTH dogs WILL be fixed. My question is being that right now neither dog has been altered at what age do dogs become sexual? I fell kinda silly asking this but I just want to be careful. My wife and I are planning on getting Milo neutered next month and I assume his sister will be Spayed around the same time...It really depends on my wifes work schedule..I want her to be able to take the week off to nurse him in the day when he gets it done (not sure if this is necessary or not).

So again my question is...at what age can a dog actually get pregnant? At what age do they actually mate? I just want to make sure they are both spayed and neutered prior to that time, because like I said above 1-3 days a week they are spending all day together.

Thanks in advance.

She will probably have her first heat around 6 months of age so you want to have them both fixed before that time.

Instead of asking your wife to take a week off to nurse him, you could schedule the surgery for a Friday morning. Then, you or your wife could take the afternoon off to tend to him and he would have the weekend to recover. Believe it or not, if you don't coddle him too much and you don't let him lick the incision site he should be moving normally within a few days.

Sounds like a good idea.. I did not know that recovery could be that quick. Thanks for the reply. Is it true that females take longer to recover and heal when they are spayed? I remember when I was like 5 years old we had a female cat and when she was spayed I remember it took quite a while for her to heal. But then again I was only 5 and 10 minutes seemed like it was 10 hours lol.

My female was pretty noticeably careful for about 4 days.. I don't think she was really okay till about 10.. but she started playing a lot more at about 5 days after.

The last female I had didn't take hardly any recovery time at all....just a couple days and then I continued to crate her when she was unsupervised so that she would not pull any stitches out. I think every dog is different as to that kind of thing.

When Charlie was neutered I dropped him off in the morning and picked him up in the afternoon. He slept all that evening and night and by the next day he was rarin' to go (as my dad used to say). I had to crate him as well to keep him from running a jumping and pulling any stitches. By the 2nd day he was perfectly fine. I did continue to crate him when he was unsupervised for about 7 days though, just out of worry of him pulling his stitches out.

We got wrigley snipped at 4 months in the morning and in the afternoon he mostly slept--the next day he acted fine no difference really--they don't really need any nursing--we just kept him crated so he couldn't run around and strain himself.

Thanks for all the tips..I am going to check with my wife tonight if she has her schedule for the first week of june yet..And then hopefully make an appointment tomorrow.

I feel so bad for the little guy to have to loose his manhood..Can they do like a vasectomy for dogs? This way he still has his testicles ? I know it sounds silly but I am just curious.

Sure thing.

But then you're risking testicular cancer.

You could always get him Neuticles
:lol-sign:

The general rule of thumb is 6 months. But at work we have a 4 month old JRT who's balls have dropped and he's ready for "brain surgery" and we have an 8 month old Bichon who is just ready now. It is different for every dog, but just make sure that whenever they play together they are heavily supervised and humping is NOT allowed!
