Hello,

Recently switched our Mini Schnauzer Puppy to Canidae (2 weeks ago) by mixing with the old food she was eating. She's on all Canidae now and recently developed a problem.

She throws up while sleeping. She will be sleeping then all of a sudden she wakes up and pukes all over. I was concerned it was the Canidae, however, she is throwing up long after she eats (often times 10-12 hours after eating). I'm now starting to think it may be something else.

Whenever we take her in the backyard to do her business she runs around and eats bark, leaves, grass and anything else she can find. I'm inclined to believe this may be what's causing her to get sick.

She is active and seems healthy and is almost 5 months old. This started about a week ago and has happened 4-5 times. It's always while she is sleeping though.

Would appreciate any help or ideas.

Thanks.

I'd take her to the vet. I'm not sure if it's the food, especially since she didn't start throwing up the first week she was on Canidae.

Don't be too alarmed. Most people with small breed dogs can tell you that this has happened to them. (In other words, no need to run to your vet)

Is the vomit white or yellow? Does she usually vomit closer to the morning?

If small dogs go too long without eating then they end up vomiting. No one really knows why it happens but it is fairly common. Is she eating less volume of Canidae than she was of her previous food?

You could feed 3 small meals/day and make sure you give her a snack (biscuit or other) at night. Herschel did this for a while around the same age and then he grew out of it.

A 5 month old small breed puppy shouldn't be going 10-12 hours between meals.

Like suggested above, 3 meals a day should help.

If it doesn't, vet time.

Oh, this is news to me. We feed her around 5:00pm and again in the morning around 7:00am. That's 14 hours and we're supposed to feed her in between those hours? I'm not getting up in the middle of the night to feed a 5 month old puppy. Is this incorrect?

Can you add in a small meal before bedtime?
We could but I was concerned about her then having to use the bathroom in the middle of the night. We take her outside right before we go to sleep (11:00pm) but didn't want her having to go until morning.

We'll try it.

Thanks,

My dog will vomit if she goes 10 hours between meals. The stomach starts to produce acids and it will make her vomit. I'd suggest either adding a late meal or snack, giving pepcid to control the acid, or deal with the vomiting. I think I'd go with the first option. She's obviously getting hungry in between 14 hours of no food. That's a long while between meals, especially for a growing puppy.

That is way too long for a baby, growing puppy to go without eating!

Maybe you could feed her at 7:00 a.m., again at 2 p..m, , and again at 8 p.m.? That way she would have 3 hours before bedtime to process all of it and only 11 hours between meals.

If Wrigley goes to long between eating he will get ill. It doesn't have to be a meal at bed time perhaps just a larger snack--like a half a handfull of food or a larger treat after doing training in the evening. Generally we feed around 7am and 7pm now and he has not had problems (he is a small terrier thing mix) we generally only had problems when it was a big difference in feeding times say 6pm to 11am (if we slept in!)
