Anyhoo, I know I have asked before and everyone told me that NO Chloe isnt too skinny and she looks great...and so on and so forth...

BUT...

Last night when we were out I was petting her and I can feel her backbone and her slightly hip bones is that normal ?? Does she need MORE EVO ??

She already gets 3 cups of Innova EVO RM a day, (and you people told me that I could feed less of it than I would on any other food ;):p Just Kidding)....

I would say a little more food might be beneficial if you are feeling back and hip bones. Her build could have a lot to do with it as well.

That is part of the reason I took my dogs off of grain free/high protein foods. I just couldn't get them to maintain good weight on it. Despite it's higher calories, fat and protein they just lost weight and required more and more feed.

My friend's dog, Bailey, is the same way. She's not at all underweight and if she gained anymore she'd be too heavy for her build. As long as Chloe's bones aren't overly prominent, I wouldn't worry a whole lot.

Their not overly prominent, and they aren't sticking out where people can see them, its just that I can feel them (if that makes sense)

I was just talking to the vet about this. You SHOULD be able to feel your dogs back bone and the bones of the pelvis- they should have a very thing layer of fat over them but not much. You also should be able to feel not just ribs but also the spaces between the ribs.(think of it this way too- can you feel your ribs and hips? How fat would you have to be to stop feeling them- pretty darned fat eh?) Your dog should also have a waist when you look down at the top of her. Dogs should not be shaped like tubes :lol-sign:
The vast majority of dogs are at least overweight and many are clinically obese. Slim dogs live 15% longer according to a study I just read. If your dog is slim but healthy, be happy, it's good for her.

My pup's like this too. A lot of people do comment that he looks thin for a lab, but he's 75 pounds and just has a LOT of muscle (he's 8 months). I can actually feel spine and hip bones, but NOT ribs. I find this kind of odd, but some lab people I know say it's because he's got a lot of extra skin to grow into before he'll get that "lab" chest.

When I worked at the clinic, we were always taught that a dog that is a healthy weight would have ribs that you could easily feel and not see except maybe slightly. Hip bones and back bones were felt on dogs underweight. But, it does depend on breed as well. In many of the sight hounds you should be able to see ribs, hip and back bones. The saluki is a great example of this. On a pug, if you could easily feel back and hip bones, I would be really concerned... that would be a really underweight pug for the breed's natural build.

It is true that dogs even slightly under their ideal weight live longer.
