What is your dog's *favorite* treat?

What doggie treat will your dog absolutely do anything for? In particular, I'm interested in treats that are suitable for training.

I have a Dobie pup who'd eat orange peels and toilet paper if offered and a Poodle who, on occassion, walks away from chicken. Depends on the dog. For obedience training on a daily basis, I microwave turkey franks and chop into small pieces, putting several baggies in the fridge. The bait often ends up in my mouth during attention exercises, so this is important. I also use Natural Balance rolls and cut into wedges when taking bait from home for shows/conformation. There are so many treats out there, some with fewer additives and preservatives than these, that you should be able to find something all of your dogs like quite easily. The key is something easily broken into whatever size you determine is appropriate and that it's soft. The dog has to be able to chew and swallow without lowering head, interupting the exercise or taking his focus off of you.

Lizzie reallllly loves Mozzorela Cheese sticks.... She LOVES them.

She also likes cooked (like grilled or boiled) chicken.

Honestly she likes any and all cooked meats. And most cheeses.

I use all of these as treats for training anything.

Meg has gotten less picky over the last year. She'll work for pretty much any meat or cheese; I rarely use "dog treats", but the ones she loves are the Dogswell Chicken breathies.

For really big-deal situations, nothing works better than a McDonald's double cheeseburger, plain. But since that is probably borderline toxic as well , they are saved for special situations.

Not always. Some dogs can eat them constantly without any ill effects, others die after eating one.

It's better to be safe than sorry but if your dog is already eating grapes then I don't see any reason to worry.

Why would you feed them even if you know they can kill your dog?

I would never feed something that has the potential to be toxic.

Anyways... Buddy does flips for peanut butter. Not really training treat worthy, but he loves it nonetheless.

All of our dogs are extremely food motivated and they get wellness bites, charlee bears (great for training!!) and Banzai and Bella get Innova treats and Buddy gets NB treats. Whew. Lots of treats. lol

My thoughts exactly. That's like me saying, there's a 50/50 chance this could be toxic so it's not always toxic, so I'm just going to go ahead and feed it.


As for my dogs, they love anything cheese.

My chis loooooove boiled chicken, cheese, baby carrots, blue berries, and yogurt Ooooh, and they love raw eggs.

In 'new' situations I try to go for stuff pretty smelly to keep her working. When it's old hat I can use near anything.

For a class where they are going to be getting a fair amount of food treats, I like to make up a mixed bag- keeps it interesting for the dog.
I'll mix chopped up chicken weiners, Charlee Bears, Natural Balance roll, homemade liver or salmon treast, chopped up leftover meat or chicken etc

I like to mix something lower cal and dry with something more moist and high value, because it's as if the smell and loisture of the weiners (for instance) gets onto the Charlee bears and they become more high value.

I like having cheese sticks on hand for jackpots.

As far as food treats go, they go insane for peanut butter and eggs...

Sawyer will almost wiggle himself to pieces to get a bit of beef jerky or Natural Balance roll, so those are the high value treats. Otherwise I use Charlee Bears and Benny Bully's dried liver bits.

We use Charlie Bears as training treats as well. They are the perfect size

Its all in the dosage. Buster like a bit of chocolate if I'm having some. Something like a billionth of a poisonous dose

He'll do just about anything for a standard milkbone actually. I tried to rubberize some hot dog, but its now extra crunchy...

Charlee Bears are great! I love the egg & cheese ones. They're the perfect size.
Old Mother Hubbard, Newman's Own, Natural Balance rolls, Solid Gold jerky, Zukes, Wellness... all good brands. Some are crunchy and some are soft, so it depends on what works for you in training. Auggie is a chewer so the crunchy stuff is not from training sessions, or he'll stop and crunch away! =P I've also seen something called Arks Natural Sea something or other..? Supposed to be good for joints. Have not tried it yet, though...

Like sam, I always put several different treats into my treat bag to try and keep it interesting. =>
