Well, beau's been having some poop issues again so we talked to our handler. He was on raw while he was showing, which I think would be the best thing for him, but my parents don't want to mess with the hassle. So anyways, she also recommended fish and potato formulas. So I thought we'd try Natural Balance Fish and Sweet Potatoes. Well none of the feed stores here sell it. They refuse to stock it because the fish are farm grown and something about mercury levels in it. Is that normal for a holistic pet food supply store? The fish and potato foods they have here are Wellness and California Natural (Herring and sweet potato). Have you heard anything about those? How do they compare?

The store gave us free samples of both of them and he likes them the same it seems.

He's done really pretty good on Canidae but every now and then he gets really disgusting yellow runny stools and he's had them more than usual now...

Hi
Nemo was on Wellness it's a great food , but he pooped like 5x a day:( so I switched him to NB (Sweet Potato) and he is dong great on it and the poop in only 2x a day now, sometimes but rarely 3:) I think the Wellness is just as good as NB, my dog just had the poop issue, yours may not. I live in Staten Island (N.Y.)and I travel to New Jersey to get the NB about 25 minutes away, but it's worth it to me..
Good Luck,
Andrea:)

Hm.. still not sure what to do. The closest feed store is already 20 or so minutes away and carries everything... except the farm grown fish. We don't have a Petco in town, so that's out of the question even though they sell NB. I'm trying to push for raw, which the people at the feed store have been tlaking to us about it a lot, but I think we're going to try the California Natural right now.

From a quality and company stand point, I would rate California Natural much higher. I just wish their fish formula didn't contain barley as an ingredient, but other than that, it's a very high quality food and a great choice.

You may want to look into Pinnacle made by Breeder's Choice as well.

Or, Eagle Pack Holistic makes a really nice fish formula:

Good luck with whatever you decide on. :)

My dogs have always pooped buckets on the Fish formulas. Ilsa and Besame are eating Wellness Fish right now because the local feed store is getting rid of it (so I got a 30lb bag for only $11... wowee!)

... and they're pooping more. Ah well. Their food stinks to high heaven too, it's nasty. Besame gets hot water added to hers, and so my kitchen smells like a fish market around mealtimes.

I would try getting some samples. I tried to get Kai on the CN fish formula a while back, but he wouldn't touch the sample. I would definitely see if you can get him on the Pinnacle or CN. Kai is on the Natural Balance venison formula. His coat looks really lovely and he likes the taste, but I don't think it's the best food and I have some issues with the company. After his stomach problems get diagnosed on Tuesday, he'll be eating something else.

Anyway, good luck!

California Natural is by far the best of those choices. Even if your dog doesn't like it or you aren't satisfied by it, you can give the bag back to the feed store.

By the way, I think it's really great that they are responsible enough to screen their products. Our favorite store didn't have a single food recalled during this wheat gluten fiasco and I was glad that I go to them for all of my pet needs.
