I am SO heartbroken! I have just gotten a 5 week old 2 # Jack Russell Terrier puppy. She scratched nonstop from the minute I picked her up. Not only did the owner (not a breeder) not give her any shots, but they did not worm her! I took her to the vet for the 1st time on monday afternoon. We got her on Sat morning. Between those days we played with her, loved on her, kissed her on the head, and even let her sleep with me in my bed. Then we find out that she has Scarcoptic Mange. Now the vet is recommending complete isolation for 2 weeks until this is resolved ( I have a 4 year old son). I can't bear this! She is all alone in her kennel day and night! She cries so much! I really think that if I were going to contract the mange (and it is contagious) that I would have already done so between Sat morning and Monday, right? Does anyone have any suggestions for easing her sweet little abandoned heart or my crumbling one? Thanks so much!

:yikes: After reading several replies to various questions posted, I have come to the conclusion that I am in BIG trouble. Not only is my puppy too young to be away from the mother and litter, but now she is isolated and will likely turn out shy or aggressive or even angry. I cannot begin to explain the feelings I am having right now! I feel like an elephant is sitting on my chest!

Ok Calm down. You're ok and you're going to do the best you can for this pup. You obviously love her and care about her and that's the best start she can have 
Now, I have never dealt with mange and know very little about it. I'm going to try to find someone who can give you better advice on that.

I'm with Saje ......your pup comes #1 now . Bubba picked up mange in Canada one summer . He and all dogs he came in contact with got shots . I never was told that it was human contagious . I would check with my doctor as interaction at this age is too important . ...... also house breaking . Maybe the new sanitizing lotions would help . Keep us posted and d@mn that breeder !!!!

#1, do what you need to in order to get your pup healthy. Is she on any medication like Ivermectin? I'm currently training a pup with sarcoptic mange and that's what he's on, but he's also 12 weeks old. Not sure if 5 weeks is old enough but ask your vet about it.
If she's super itchy, give her a bath with very gentle, moisturizing oatmeal shampoo. She has a short coat so just bathe her in warm water and then keep her warm, wrapped up in dry towels until she's completely dry.
Socialization is important, but you can double up on that after she's healthy. In the meantime, since she needs to be isolated, keep her living area very clean and give her a lot of interactive toys to play with.
I don't know much about how mange is spread so I would handle her carefully. Give her some interaction with you, but don't rub her all over you. lol

oh you guys are great! Thanks RD! She has gotten 1 shot of Ivermectin and will be reevaluated in 2 weeks. I agree about doubling up on the attention, I just pray that it will be sufficient. Also, she is crated all day while I and my husband work. Right now it is about 40 degrees in the morning when we leave for work and I feel that is too cold to put her outside at that time. Any suggestions as far as pottying? Man this is a lot of work!!! The things you do for love!!!

This is a very young puppy as you know, so at this point be realistic about potty training and expectations.
What I would suggest you do for this pup while you are at work is to purchase an excercise pen like this: http://www.petsmart.com/global/prod...ise+pen&In=All&previousText=excercise+pen&N=2 and then put your puppy, a crate with an open door, toys and food and water in there along with puppy pads on the floor. Set this pen up on a non-absorbant floor. This will keep your puppy from having accidents in it's crate, but the crate is still available for nap time etc. As your puppy matures, it will eventually be able to be crated for longer periods and able to hold it.

Just wanted to reassure you that your puppy will come out ok. when we got my pit puppy booger a few years ago she was tiny at 3 lbs/6 weeks old andgot mange about a week or two later. She is a great loving, very well adjusted dog she took alot of work mind you but we have no behavior problems with her!
