Hi all, I'm having this problem now as my puppy seems to be hungry all the time. No matter how much food I give him, he will finish it. That's really give me a hard time to estimate how much to feed him all the time.

I used to give 2 handful of dog biscuits and now I've increased it up to 3 full handful of biscuits. Yet, my puppy will finish it without any problem.

Any advise on how to stop him from eating (if he's full) and how to estimate how much to feed him?

Thanks all in advance...

Eating when food is available is an instinctive canine survival mechanism.

You can not rely on your dog's appetite to tell you how much to feed him. Talk to your vet, and keep an eye on body condition to determine whether to increase or decrease the amount of food.

Canids in the wild MUST eat when food is available in order to survive. There might be a lot of food today, and none for the next 3. If the animal does not eat and eat ALL IT CAN when the food IS available, he might pay for it seriously if food is NOT available the next several days.

Eating everything offered and always being hungry is typical of dogs, and feeding them because they are hungry by innocently ignorant owners is a main cause of the massive obesity problem that exists in the pet population today.

Feed your dog what he needs. And just a little now and then of what he might WANT.

;)

thanks for the comments. what worries me is, my puppy will be awake in the middle of the night and keep whining if i didnt feed him enough.

if i stuff him too much food, im afraid he will be overweight sooner or later.

hmm, may i know how do you all feed ur doggies? I mean how do you all measure the right amount of food to feed them?

Hi Happy,
If you could tell us where you are from I think it would help us answer your questions.

A lot of us know the caloric needs of our dogs and feed appropriately, others follow the guidelines on the back of their bags of dog food.

Happy is from Malaysia I believe.

Happy, when you say that you give him biscuits, do you mean kibble or actual biscuits. If they are biscuits you'll have to get kibble because biscuits are meant for treats not an actual diet. If you mean kibble then what brand do you feed and what are the ingredients? You should use a measuring cup to feed so you know the exact amount he gets. My dog never got as much as the bag said and he was the perfect weight, sure if you gave him food he'd eat it but he would become obese. So basically you should keep an eye on his condition. If he is too fat give him a little less and increase exercise and if he is too skinny then give more food. Since he is a puppy he will need maybe even more food than as an adult because he is growing. I think it would help to know what you are feeding.

Also it depends on breed, and growth rate. I would imagine that you aren't giving puppy loads of exercise as he is a baby?!

I weigh my dog food.. Yep, actually get the scales out a weigh it! LOL! I also factor in how much exercise they are doing.

What sort of size will he be? Obviously you don't want to stunt his growth by giving him too little, but if he is for example a chi, you don't want to be feeding him the same amount as a Great Dane pup! ;)

Red gave you some good advice, talk to your vet, weigh him regularly. And most good quality foods will give you guideline as to how much to feed him for his age. Remember this is only a guideline though, it's not fixed, if you see him looking a bit poor on the suggested ration, give him more!

Oh, and have you wormed him? He could have worms which is causing the hunger issue... Either that or he is a typical dog, with a one track mind! ;)

A really good way to figure out how much to feed is to look on the back of the dog food bag it goes by age and wight, then it will tell you how many cups to feed, like Rosco he is 10mo feild lab(ILPed) and is like 67lbs, and he eats 5cups a days on wellness, 2 for breakfast and 3 for dinner. He is in VERY good shape and I have always feed my dogs using that guide line on the bag. If you feed a more high quality food, like Wellness, Nuto foods, Eagle Pack, Royal Canin, Soild Gold, Calafornia Natural, Enniova, they will fill up faster since the food is higer quality they wont eat as much and they wont poop as much:D The food is expensive but in the long run its cheeper since you arent buying so much of it.

Hope I helped:) I have done SO much research on dog foods its crazy.

A great filler to fill the dog up with min add on calories is Green beans.
Buy a huge cans of green beans and add to food I used that to take some weight off a heavy bitch so I can finish her title AFTER she gave birth.

It worked plus i fed nutro nc diet

well most people here just probably just use a standard measuring cup that you buy from the store (well I do). I go by the back of the bag and adjust if my dogs are getting too skinny or overweight. Giving handfuls of dog biscuits isn't really a very accurate way of feeding your puppy though. What kibble do you feed? Maybe trying switching his kibble.

oh, i feed him with local brand dog food. sorry it's not biscuit, it's lamb&rice treat. ****, i dunno wat im talking about...

u r right Herschel, i do not hav many choices here. In addition, the branded dog food like Eagle, Purina...it's so expensive here. All the imported brands are really rip off here.

what i did yesterday, i gave him 1cup of dogfood, after finished it, he still whining n keep licking my toe (auww).... so, I gave him another cup. after that, he stopped bothering me and walk away to do his 'business'. so i guess 2cups is just right for my puppy :)

my puppy is 10weeks old now, so by what age, i should increase his food weight?

thanks all.

That is pretty dangerous, if you ask me. You should control how much food your dog gets, your dog shouldn't control how much food you give him!

Have you checked the bag to make sure there are no feeding guidelines? Is there a phone number on the bag that you could call to ask about it?

What kind of food are you feeding, Happy? Is the "Back to Basics" that I suggested before available to you?
