What breeds are quietest?

Eventually I'm going to try to persuade my landlord to let me keep a dog in my apartment. *crosses fingers* What breeds tend to be the quietest? (I know it depends on the individual dog, but in general. )

I have to disagree a bit with the basenji. Basenjis have a reputation as difficult to train and while they do not bark they do chortle and yodel and make other oddball noises which help to make them endearing.

There are certainly large variations within breeds. In our apartment complex the 2 poodles that right next to me (different apartments) bark constantly, earning their top 10 status on Jason's list.

My mini poodle never barks or vocalizes at all unless someone knocks on the door...then just one yip.

My question for those with experience...if you are looking for a quiet dog is your best solution to find a dog with 2 quiet parents, or are their huge variations even within litters?

MY suggestion would be to go to the local pound and get an adult dog. That way, you know EXACTLY what you are getting as opposed to taking a guess with a puppy.

You can also train a dog to learn when it is acceptable to be loud and rambunctious, and when it is not. It's easier with some breeds than others, but it's hard to say, as stated above, what you're going to get with puppies, even based on the parents.

All I know is the quietest breed is NOT shelties. LOL

Best bet is to go and look at adult dogs. Then you'll now excatly what they are like. My sheltie never barked as a pup and grew up to be very vocal.

My Border Collies are quiet. The pup hasn't made a sound other than quiet whines and growls (and I don't expect her to make much noise at all, all the dogs in her lines are silent workers) and Dakota, who is vocal for a BC, only barks when commanded to or when someone comes to the door.

I do have to throw out a caution about shelter dogs. They may not bark at the shelter, but once they settle in at home they can make more noise than a small jet. I fostered a GSD that was absolutely silent at the shelter and quite the barker/howler at home.

I'd be prepared to work on noise issues with any dog you get. No dog is truly silent, lol.

The noise increases a hundred fold when my dad visits with his Sheltie and Tibetan Spaniel. My APBT only barks when stimulated by play or teased into it.

^^^^ thats how mine are. Tytus barks and jumps(dances) for his food but thats it.

Walker barely ever barks the last time i heard him bark was a month ago now he whines and stuff when we play but never a full out bark (unless we are hunting)

I do remember the Tosa inu as being very quiet compared to other Guardian breeds

Athena very rarely barks and
Sal NEVER barks, he will make a whining sound if I leave him in the car alone but its not really a bark. I have asked several of my neighbors if they have ever heard my dogs and they have all said that they never hear my dogs.

So I would say American Staffordshire Terriers are very quiet if raised correctly.

Tosa were very big in the Bronx projects because they would protect so quietly.
My self defense buddy came home to find a part of a finger in the grate they had protecting the windows.
He went next door no one heard a thing..

Colt barks a lot. Of course, I knew this beforehand, and some say their herders are quiet, but I think, as a rule, most herders are barkers. (at least Collies and Shelties are).

Basenjis can be quiet. What you would have to worry about is when he or she is alone. They can make a crying sound that can be very alarming. No, they do not bark and they do not yodel unless their emotions tell them to. But, as I said, the crying can scare a neighbor who doesn't know that you have a basenji or what one is. They may think that there is a child alone. That is, of course if you have a basenji that cries.

In my experience yeah, Collies are barkers but on the otherhand I have had some VERY quiet Collies. One of the I have right now. Bailey is very vocal. Chloe rarely barks unless Bailey is on a barking tangent. My last RB Collie (Timmie) ONLY barked when the kids in the neighborhood were on their four wheelers out by the woods. He NEVER barked when someone was at the door or any other time. He would bark when I asked him to "speak". The Collie I had as a kid didn't bark either except in play.

Well, as far as apartment sized dogs go...Cavalier King Charles spaniels are relatively quiet. Some pugs are quiet, some are incredibly noisy...most mini schnazuers are very barky and it's an ear piercing bark at that.

It really does all come down to the induvidual dog and some training. My Aussie is the biggest loudmouth at work, pretty much totally silent at home.

My Sibes are very quiet until the mention of dinner, a walk, and especially RUNNING come up. Then they start talking but rarely ever barking
