I've started making my own yogurt to add to the dog's food since I go through it so quickly. The first batch I attempted...basically sucked aesthetically. It was really runny. The dogs didn't care, of course, but I did. I'm kind of a perfectionist when it comes to cooking.

So anyway, I mixed up batch #2 on Friday and used it for the first time tonight...it was almost store-bought looking! :D It tastes kind of gross, since there's no sugar or anything in it...but that's quite easy to add, so I'm going to mix up another batch here pretty soon for "human consumption" and bake up some apples to mix in for some homemade apple cinnamon yogurt.

And as an awesome side effect, it's made Virgo slow down when eating...she's actually taking the time to taste the food and doesn't just inhale it anymore. :)

Ooooh! How did you do it? My mum bought me one of those fancy schmancy yoghurt makers, because I used to love yoghurt when I was a child... The fact that I haven't eaten any for about 15 years is beside the point  :D, but I must admit I do looooove Lemon yoghurt and it's sooooo expensive!!

I must get the thing out of the box and read the distructions.. Problem is getting fresh unpasturised milk or yoghurt products here in the first place, the French are real fans of UHT! :(

The recipie I have calls for powdered milk and a can of evaporated milk. My mom got it from some Mennonites waaay back in the day.
No machine needed, just a spoonful of already made yogurt for the active cultures and a warm oven to start the process.

Sure, no problem!

3 cups instant powdered milk
1/2-1 tsp unflavored gelatin (or one packet of Knox instant)
1 Tbsp sugar (optional)
1 large can evaporated milk
3 Tbsp yogurt
water

Soften gelatin in 1 cup of boiling water. Add sugar if desired and let mixture cool a bit. (Glass bowls work best)
Preheat oven to 275 (250-300 is ok).
Mix 3 cup instant powdered milk with 3 cups water. (I do this in a seperate bowl)
Add 1 can evaporated milk, 2 more cups of tepid water and add to gelatin mixture.
Add 3 Tbsp of yogurt and stir thoroughly.
Cover bowl with tea towel and put in oven. TURN OVEN OFF! Leave overnight or about 8-10 hours.
Makes about 2 quarts (150 calories per cup)
