Natural Balance; HELLLLPP!!!!

I realise you all are probably sick of me posting dog food threads... I'm sorry, but I need help again!

Today my dad was pretty frustrated when we bought the dog food today. He believes dog food doesn't matter, and he would much rather feed "the cheap kind" [such as Exceed, Black Gold, Pedigree, etc]. I've talked my mom into it though, and we are going to feed quality dog food. :) About 2 weeks ago, we went out and bought a 35lbs. bag of “Dick Van Patten's Natural Balance Ultra Premium Dog Food” dry dog food, and it was $32.99. This was fine... but today, at the same place, it was $39.99. I've mentioned this dog forum before, and how you all helped me make decisions relating to dog food... and today, my dad said, "I guarantee you no one on that stupid dog forum pays that much for their stupid dog food." I ignored this comment as best I could.

Please tell me if there is a BETTER or EQUAL quality of dog food, compared to Natural Balance, that is CHEAPER than $39.99 for 35lbs.

Thank you all so much.

Try Canidae. I used the chicken meal and rice formula and bought a 30 lb bag for $25. Check their website to see if it's available near you (canidae.com). It's really good food for the price. Also if you have a Costco membership you can look into the Kirkland brand foods they are like $20 for 40 lbs or so (never fed it but have thought about it).

Just to let you know that I spend more than $40 on dog food a month (I have 2 dogs). I buy a 16 lb bag of Timberwolf Organic and that's like $29 and then I buy various pieces of raw meats and everything for my one dog and that's probably about $10 or a couple dollars more a month. So I guess I'm stupid than :D .LOL!

It's not just a good food for the price, it's a great food, period! I think they're the only independent pet food company that has the idea right: quality foods at decent prices.

A 40lb bag of Canidae shouldn't run you more than $35 and it is a great food.

Yeah they are really good. All my dogs, except for Holly, have done great on the chicken meal and rice formula. Holly's just wierd too and I think that's why she didn't do good on it :D. I remember one day I needed to buy a small (5 lb bag) of food to last Hannah a week and I was going to grab something cheap like Iams and I was shocked to see that the smallest bag of Iams was MORE expensive than the smallest bag of Canidae. Needless to say I bought the Canidae and had more than enough to last her the week (and Hannah is a 55 lb dog and I only bought a 5 lb bag).

I wish I could get my food at that price. My family pays $55.00 every two weeks!

Canidae might be worth a try though. It's a great food and I think the price is really good too in most places.

THANKS EVERYONE!! :)

I checked the site, and there is a place that sells in Canidae my area. I'm a little confused though, because it is an 800 number [rather than my area code]. I guess I will just call the number tomorrow and see what I find out!

So you would rank Canidae over Natural Balance?? It sounds like it...

Thanks again. :)

Canidae is really great quality food for very little $.

If you have access to it, you may want to also look for Healthwise made by Natura. This is a very good quality "budget" food. A lot of places that carry Innova can special order it for you if they don't carry it. I paid $28.99 for 35lbs.

Also, I think you can get NB at Petsmarts :)

But I would recommend Canidae over NB ;)

And I pay, for a 33 pound bag of Canidae ALS Chicken and Rice Formula for I think $37.

I pay 43.00 a bag for NB. Canidae is a great food. Also, look at the ingredients in Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul. It is very good and similar to Canidae....lots of meat. It tends to run a little less than Canidae. NB, at least around here is not carried by Petsmart but is by Petco. It may not be the same everywhere, I suppose.

I was also going to suggest Chicken Soup for the Dog Lovers Soul. Or if you have a Costco club, the kirkland food isn't too bad for a great price.

I do not have a Costco in my area.

I checked on Canidae:
$34.50 40lbs ALS
$37.99 35lbs Platium [one of my dogs is a chunk]

I checked on Chicken Soup:
$25.98 35lbs ALS

Now, between Canidae and CS Dog Lover... which is a better quality??

I talked with my parents...

The place that I called the 800 number, it didn't work out. He sells to companies. So the location where I would have to buy Canidae is too far away.

We're going with the Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul. That's what it is going to be. My parents are happy... we're saving $15 a bag compared to Natural Balance. Also, my dad knows the people who work at the store that sells CS, and the people are very friendly. The people at PetCo have been extremely rude. And I'm happy because it is a good quality dog food. EVERYONE IS HAPPY!! Finally, everything is solved [this has been going on for months now]!

Thanks for all the help from everyone. :)

My dogs eat chicken soup for pet lovers..........it is a really good food. I don't know if anyone here gets or reads The Whole Dog Journal, but every year they do a top rated dry food list. They rate the foods by ingredients, and only the best make the list. No foods with 'by products' or 'corn'........they explain how they pick the foods, every dog is different and there is no "best food" for all.
Anyway, there are 54 dog foods on the 2007 list and Chicken soup for pet lovers is included.

Good for you for advocating so well for your dog to get decent food. I would feed NB of CS but either one is a heck of a lot better than grocery store food.

Natural Balance Ultra on the Petco web site is on sale for 32.99 for the 30 pound bag and every 10 bags you get a free one from NB, so that works out to less than $30 a pag ( if my math is correct) ..... So it works out to less than $1 a pound.

This is what I currently feed them. I bought my first bag of this about 2 weeks ago. I got it for $32.99 for a 35lbs bag. That was perfectly fine. Then, my dad went out yesterday, bought it using our pals card [to get the discount], and it was $39.99. I called them today... they said $32.99 was an online price. So I politely asked why we got it for the sale price last time, and not this time. He said, "the sale must've ended on 01.14.07." But online it says it ends on 01.19.07. My dad called last night to ask, and the lady was extremely rude to him. And I was in the room during the phonecall, and my dad was being very polite. He also commented on how rude the cashier was. ALSO, when I got my pals card, it had someone elses name in the card. So I told the manager at Petco, and they gave me a form to fill out, so I could change the information about the card [name, address, etc]. The information was never changed. So I'm pretty upset with PetCo right now.

So I would have to pay $39.99 a bag. The NB isn't going to be on sale all year around... so more times than others, I would have to pay at least that amount.
