So I'm in another thread asking about kibble, and what to do if my dox doesnt seem to enjoy the kibble I'm choosing for him.

And I'm curious, how many people here dress up their dogs kibble with gravy, canned food, or whatever to make their dogs eat it? And what do you use?

I've mixed Stogie's kibble with canned innova, which he loved - but the canned foods seem to give him the runs :( so I stopped that.

I've tried Chicken broth... he didn't care for that.
I tried peanut butter - and HE LOVES THAT! But that gives him GAS and Diarrhea! :yikes: OH NO!
White/Cream gravy (like from last nights Chicken Tenders), He really enjoys that and he has no issues with that either.
We tried a little BBQ sauce or A1 Steak sauce - HE HATES THOSE! Walks away from the bowl... We even tried some of those doggie BBQ sauces, he hates those too.. REFUSES TO EAT THE KIBBLE with any of these on.

What do you use - if anything.

I pretty much always add something when I feed kibble. Raw egg, cottage cheese, yogurt, any leftover meat or veggies...on really lazy mornings, I throw on a bit of shredded cheese. Meg has a stomach of steel, so no tummy problems.

A breeder I know suggested putting a little bit of chicken baby food in kibble to make it more appealing for puppies. :) My big guys eat their kibble alone, no problem, though I do add a raw egg to their food a few times a week.

As Lizmo suggested, you may want to try a different kibble. It took me several tries to find a good one that my dogs would eat! And my bigger dog is kind of picky, but I find that adding some water to the kibble and letting it soak in before feeding it really helped.

Another tip, though a bit strange: try garlic powder! I used to have an old pug that was terribly picky, but soaking his kibble and adding a sprinkle of garlic really did the trick. :)

I put two spoonfuls of homemade plain yogurt over my dog's kibble. It started out as just for Mollie because of her stomach issues (which thankfully seem to have gone away) and then Sawyer was getting jealous, so he started getting some as well.

I think garlic is bad for dogs? I can't remember...I know onions are.

Herschel eats his Canidae without anything on it, but we still like to give him some extras.

In the morning:
-4mL Lakse Kronch Salmon Oil + warm water

In the evening (one of the following):
-Olive oil + ground flax seed + warm water
-Brown rice + a little bit of water
-Veg-to-Bowl (http://www.cleanrun.com/moreinfo.cfm?Product_ID=1730)

Tonight, he had Veg-to-Bowl with ground flax on top. (This morning he ate his kibble dry so he got the jackpot at night)

I wasn't sure about the garlic for dogs thing (though at the time had never heard of it). The stuff I used was more of a saltless garlic-based seasoning powder, not really much garlic in a serving, not like giving a fresh piece of it or anything. Though I have seen garlic supplements for dogs so I don't think a little sprinkle of it would be bad.

My dogs eat their kibble with gusto. I still try to add a scoop of canned with water to every meal though. They like this and I like adding a little canned to each meal.

My dogs will do backflips for just plain kibble, but here are some things I add anyway:

Plain yogurt, cottage cheese, pumpkin, carrots, green beans, blueberries, raw ground bison, beef, chicken, or turkey, eggs, oatmeal, rice...

It's late so that's all I can think of lol...

Shredded Cheese

I add a little shredded cheese in with Great Danes's food. She seems to eat more that way. She is really light for a dane and while I am not tying to fatten her up I would like to see her put on a few pounds. I also mix in a half a can of dog food with their kibble both morning and evening. They run to where I am going to put their food bowl down.

My lab Kona would eat anything that is not trying to eat her, so no problems there. We feed the dogs Pinnacles Trout and Sweet Potato and they both love it.

Now that my dog is back on dry food, I have to add a couple of tablespoons of warm water to her food. It's the only way she eats it. It doesn't seem like it, but it makes a very big difference with just a little water compared to dry only. She loves it!

I do add some canned food to the dry. I feed them dry Canidae. One of mine didn't like the wet added until I found out he didn't want it mixed in, only on the side. Now I put the dry in the bowl and put the wet next to the dry. It only took me 4 years to figure this one out.

Smokey loves Natural Balance Kibble, no matter which kind, plain. I like to make it taste different so she won't get bored with it so I alternately add the following:

1. A few cooked chicken gizzards sliced in small pieces.
2. A tablespoon of canned NB to a cup of Kibble, and I switch flavors every can.
3. Canned saltless string beans, a couple of tablespoons
4. An ounce or two of broiled Salmon chopped and stirred in.
5. A small amount of grated NB food roll sprinkled on the kibble

Most meals ( 2x a day) she gets one of the above added to the kibble. She licks the bowl clean as a whistle whether it is "enhanced" or just plain Kibble.....

dress up

Wrigley would eat dirt if you put in his bowl...so he eats his dry Eagle Pack no problem-o, but for dinner I try to sometimes add something special like a raw egg or a bit of what I am cooking (a little raw hamburger or a little shredded cheese or green beans)----he really likes eating out of date leftovers too!

LOL. I love that. I wish Skye was like that. She is picky, picky, picky. I've started putting raw egg in or a bit of tripe sausage that i buy at the pet shop. I mix that through and pour over a couple of tbsps of water.

I'd really prefer to get her on raw but am waiting till I take her to the vet next month so he can recommend a probiotic. You can't buy that kind of thing in any pet shop near me so it will be something from the chemist.

Usually just water. Sometimes an egg or leftovers.

I don't think you should train your dog to only eat kibble with stuff on it though. You may want to switch brands to something more appealing if this kibble doesn't take. I do find that just adding water bring out the smell of it more which can help.

Quite a variety list there people. Looks like I might have to try some of these things... What I've noticed about my little guy is 1) he doesn't eat much - he is only 9 lbs after all. 2) after he's had something "human food" he looses ALL INTEREST in the dog food - whatever it may be.

What are some of your dogs weights and how often do they eat?

Stogie, for example, is 8.8lbs (weighed him yesterday at the vet), and he eats twice a day usually, and he eats about 1/3 to 1/2 cup per meal (I'm guessing here). One of the behavior things about him, he WILL NOT eat alone.. if no one is in the kitchen with him - HE WONT EAT.... SERIOUSLY.

Quick story, my mom was in the hospital a few months ago, and while no one was home, we left Stogie in the tiled kitchen with a big bowl of food and fresh water - all day long. We'd come home at 10pm or whenever, and NOT A SINGLE PIECE OF KIBBLE WOULD BE EATEN.. We'd walk in the door, play with him, sit in the kitchen and he'd eat like there was no tomorrow. This dog WILL NOT eat alone - period.
