I'm thinking of switching to Canidae. How can I do this without hurting my dogs tummies? Also I'm kinda scared after I read one review that said their dog was allergic to one of the ingredients in that food. Is that a common thing? Right now they're on Iams.

Just switch slowly by reducing the amount of old and adding more of the new food. Honestly, Canidae is usually pretty easy on the stomach for most dogs. It's much better than Iams! As far as your dog being allergic, that goes with any food. If your dog isn't allergic to any of the ingredients then you wont have a problem. Give it a try, it will be a big improvement.

I was going to try the chicken and rice. What do you suggest?

BTW, my fiancee Sean saw the pics of your pups in your signature and was oohing and aaahing over them! :) He adores pugs and bull dogs, and yours are so gorgeous!

Aww, thanks. My dogs are blushing;)

I think the chicken and rice would be a good start. I like that one for smaller dogs because it has a little more fat and protein which toy breeds and terriers can really benefit from. Plus, it's ingredients are simple compared to the ALS formula and that can make the transition easier on them.

While we're on the subject of nutrition, I just asked a question about free feeding in chat.

I free feed my dogs and haven't seen a problem with it, but I'm wondering if I shouldn't be doing it this way.

I'm also worried if I change it to scheduled feedings will the dogs be starving?

You are too funny. No! They wont starve LOL! My dogs eat in the morning and at night only. Dogs are opportunistic feeders. They eat when food is available, that is how they survive in the wild. So, it is natural for them to beg and act hungry and take food when it's offered. That doesn't mean they are starving or hungry or miserable!

If free feeding works for you then that's okay too. Just watch closely to make sure your dogs are an okay weight. A lot of dogs become obese with this feeding method and it's hard for us to see the weight creep up because we see our dogs everyday. I also am not a fan of free feeding because I like to know exactly how much my dog is eating. This is particularly helpful if a dog is ill or refusing food. It's hard to tell when the food is always sitting out.

I think I'll try it and see how it goes! They haven't had a problem with it yet, but I'm not sure if they will in the future.

I'm so soft when it comes to them!! I promised myself I would NOT be one of those people who gave their dogs treats whenever they beg and I've so done that. Now I'm trying my hardest not to. Why do they have to be so cute?! LOL
