could all of the people here with dobermans tell me a little about them? I am researching them and i do know about them. but i would much rather hear it from my fellow chazzers. i trust you guys more, i guess. and i love personal stories.

hopefully in a couple of years a Bruce and I will own our own home. We would be getting a second dog then. Him and I both do like dobermans alot. but this is as far as looks only. neither of us has ever been around a doberman.

I spent 4 years or more researching shelties before i decided to get one (partially because my living situation was secure a year ago) and i plan on spending lots of time thinking about a dobie before i would get one.

If i didnt want a show doberman is it possible to get a dobie with uncropped ears from a reputable breeder? i would say not....
just wondering because i do like natural ears better.
AND is it possible to find a white dobie from a reputable breeder? id say not to that also.

so... tell me about dobermans
with other dogs breeders
ability to protect the home
loyalty
just anything you think i should know.
or just give me a link to a website that will not lie to me! there are so many contradicting sites of so many dog breeds!

Until the Dobie people come along - you might be able to find an uncropped puppy, but whites are not something a reputable breeder would produce.

I've worked with them for years as a trainer and they are one of my top "What I'd Get If I Couldn't Have Collies" breeds. Silly yet regal at the same time.

hmm life without collies?? forget about it ;) lol

yup, i figure if i want an uncropped i should just rescue. this is a few years down the road so i dont know if i want to show or not. i do want to show, but i can show and handle any of the 30 collies at work, so why get a show dobie?
i will just have to see what happens then.

Many breeders breed uncropped dogs. Some of the best imported dogs are uncropped and undocked, and are amazing dogs. I doub't you'd have any trouble finding a breeder to supply you with an uncropped puppy; you can specifically ask for that.

Hi rabbitsarebetter... Dobies are a wonderful breed, I've enjoyed owning and training them. Someones already refered you to the site I'd look at first for info, the DPCA. Best to do you homework on genetic diseases and health problems prevalent in this breed. Stay away from anyone breeding whites, Z factor, and really look at as many breeders/pups as possible, before selecting your breeder. Then get yourself on the waiting list. For a really good puppy from a well know breeder, it could take awhile, but it's worth the wait.

We have two Dobes that come to the local park - a chocolate and a black. Floppy ears, full tails. Spectacular. I love them! I agree - Dobermans are a lovely breed and Max and I would like to share our lives with one at some stage in the future.

Dobes are great!

thats my big baby-he is both cropped and docked-and as clumsy as they are I would have it no other way. there are some great pics on another dobe forum that I go to with a ton of floppy eared tailed dobes and its cute but I don't think it would work at my place:p

White dobes are bad news. Any breeder that breeds any dog with white in its lines needs beat. there is no way around that at all. there are a couple threads here on it,I'll have to look for them. I have literally never met anyone who wasn't absolutely crazy that supported breeding white dobes.

they are big goofy dogs overall, kinda clownish. They love there people. Almost every dobe I have met has been a velcro dog. My boy wants to be by my side all the time. they are not supposed to be mean to strangers(would be surprised how many people want that) but they are supposed to look each person they meet over and they kinda approve them or not. My boy has growled twice in his seven years. One time at a friends party when some idiots wouldn't leave and I was getting poed and loud with them, and once at a park when it was me and byron and this strange man who kept getting closer. that time byron went all snarly nutts and the guy backed up. I still wonder if byron read my fear or read off that guy-but whatever he did it got him away and thats all I cared.

My boy loves water-but only if it can't reach his chest! He is so goofy. He just wants to run through the creeks. there have been a couple times he has fallen in and I've thought I would have to jump in after him because all he does is flail his front legs around. I always feel bad cuz I laugh every time, but it looks so funny. Or if he goes out in the lake when he realizes he can't touch he goes to the nearest person or dog and tries to climb on top of them.

honestly if you are not worried about showing/docking/cropping I would go with a rescue. there are tons and tons. my pound gets beautifull cropped dogs in a couple times a year and there are a ton of great dobne rescues.

I wouldn't buy an undocked dobe in the states-no good breeder would do that. I'd also be cautious with uncropped snce most good breeders are striving for show dogs and they want there pups to look their best and almost 100% of the time that includes the crop.

And they ahve tons of health probelms-so trying to pick based on who will give you one without doing their ears is not the way to go. There are so many people who lose their dobes young and I already cna't imagine what I'll do when my boy gets sick.
