Late Night Dog walk Turns Ugly,..

I took the dogs out last night at about 3am and was followed home by a drunk. I was a little surprised the dogs never barked until the police showed up to arrest him and take him away. (By which point he was lying on the lawn singing in the pouring rain!!)

We were out and the dogs were doing their business when I noticed that this man across the street, was staggering around an apartment complex, trying to get in all the different front doors!! When he looked up saw me,he started heading my way, so I decided to go in RIGHT NOW!!

So real quick, I went in and told my husband who was sitting in the living room getting ready to leave for dialysis.

So he cracked the front door, looked out, and noticed him now in our front yard talking to himself about a lady and her two dogs(me!)while trying to get in the front door of our neighbor's house!!!

He must have thought I had went in that house. So he called the police and thankfully they came within 5 mins!! Boy what a night! I couldn't get back to sleep after that. But at least they took him away.

Border Collies aren't all that small...she could have sent them out to herd him in. I'm sure the piercing bark and the nipping would have scared him pretty fast.

Dulce... I agree! The drunks don't come within 50 feet of me when I'm walking my pair of "vicious, Resident Evil dawgs"... at least, that's their most recent descriptive phrase from a drunk person. I think my favorite is the drunk that was convinced that my dogs were posessed by evil spirits from Haiti... that one was odd...

Border Collies are really not very small dogs. And just because a dog is small does not mean they are not protective.

Protective? Definitely. Be able to neutralize a threat if it had to? Probably not. I own large, protective dogs because they are a visual deterrant (moreso than a golden, a BC, a little dog, etc.) and because if push comes to shove, they are big enough, strong enough, and posess the right temperament to deal with the threat.

Both of my dogs have stepped up to the plate for me... both times the "bad guy" wasn't scared of their visual appearance - until the dogs reacted.

I'm not sure what he was singing because of the whipping wind and rain but he was really into it..lol.. (Lol..Now why is it drunks are always singing?)

Actually when I first noticed him. (so that he couldn't hurt anyone) I kept the dogs, and the myself, ahead of him (by using their ball as a diversion) as he was coming across the street.

So the dogs didn't really notice him, but I was surprised that my dogs didn't bark at the commotion he was making a few minutes later in our yard when he was singing.

But once we opened the door to talk to the police and both dogs saw him, then they started barking...lol.

Moonchild, that's very scary indeed! But you've got very SMART dogs. I'm sure they detected no reason for alarm. He was "hopefully" just a harmless drunk that wouldn't have done anything to you. I'm sure they knew he was there but sensed no trouble. Smart dogs! And you're especially smart for you guys to have called the cops regardless!!!

Yeah but any man trying to get in people's front door-uninvited- is a threat to me. Drunks can turn dangerous in a heartbeat. That's the thing.

Your dogs are pups, Moonchild. Dakota didn't start being protective of ME until he was about 1.5-2 years old. He's always protected his "turf" but only in the past 8-10 months has he attempted to defend me.

Heheh . . . Just remember, Sizzle . . . it's all relative. In MY world, YOUR dogs are small and not terribly scary I imagine that when her dogs are past the puppy uncertainties, nine out of ten drunks would be frightened of them when they kick into gear.

Come to think of it last month we were all outside one night and my blood sugar crashed-HARD! :yikes:

Then both dogs(especially the male, Poppy)were very snarky with the neighbor's son and his college guy friends, because I was down on the ground at that point- I was so weak.
