Grrr, animal shelter says keep the dog outside!

This is an add for a dog up for adoption. This makes me very angry
No dog NEEDS to be an outside dog, hes only 2-3 years old!

If I were a dog.. that would be an exciting life for me

I am sure a child would agree they would never want to go to school and eat treats all day. Yes they would love it, but it would not be the best life for them for example would it?

There are way to many people dumping there dogs outside and ignoring them.
Telling someone outside in an adoption add that the dog NEEDs to be outside is just wrong. I can find losts of interesting information about what happens to outside only dogs, even in rural areas where I grey up. This is a safety issue.

One of my sisters owns a Great Pyrenees and Sierra is an outside dog.

She lives up in the mountains of Colorado on 2 acres of land and she loves it.. she loves the snow and all. She comes inside every now and then.. but she's mostly and outside dog. She's a mountain dog too.. what do you expect.. a snow dog to stay inside all day?

I guess I don't see a problem with a big dog like her or other large breeds being outside dogs.. running free on lots of land.

If it was a toy breed then yea.. inside dog for sure.

Oscar and Honey NEED to be outside dogs cuz our house is too small, they pee all over, they are too energetic (we kept them inside before but they broke everything {not their fault}), and they sort of stink and shed everywhere. Plus, they HATE it inside. Always sitting by the door to get out. I understand you are mad, but maybe they have the same issues.

Yes, but dogs are not children, they are dogs and have different needs. I am guilty of anthropomorphising at times, too, and thinking that my dogs need exactly what I need, but that's not true. I am human, they are canine.

The ad is not saying - leave your dog outside to roam around and be unsafe. It's my experience that shelters are against leaving dogs outside so they probably have a very good reason for stipulating this.

A life on a farm, outside to romp around and have a great time, would be ideal for a dog - matches their needs, their psyche, and their expectations in life. Sure, probably wouldn't be great for us, but we're not dogs, are we? Although we love them and treat them like our babies, and do our best for them - it has to be what's best for THEM, not what would be best for us if we were in their positions. Like it or not, there is a difference between us and they have different needs to humans.

I would imagine that if you wanted to adopt this dog, they wouldn't be saying not to let it inside ever, they would be saying, provide a safe environment, with shelter, a place to sleep, and a lifestyle that is majority outdoors, because that's what this particular dog needs.

Its a hound. They do not have the good outside coat that some breeds like huskies do.

Secondly, no shelter, rescue or humaine society should ever demand that any dog be left outside.

If someone is going to leave there dog outside all day why get a dog? They are pack animals and thats where they belong.

This add was also posted in Canada, up north in canada, where I live, so this may also account for a lot of my perspective on outside dogs. Would you like to be an outside dog at -30c or -40c? Yes it does happens here and often. A hound does not have a good coat to deal with this kind of weather at all.

Hopefully the dogs new owner won't leave it outside all day..........

yes it is odd. every single place i have ever heard of would not let you adopt if you kept your dog outside, muchless encourage it

I think certain dogs can live very happily as outside dogs if a few conditions are met. If the dogs have plenty of human interaction, another outside dog to play with, a heat controlled dog house, a safe yard and access to the house when the dog would like to come in ( dog door, ect)

I don't see a problem either - at least I wouldn't want to assume one. You could call them and ask them their reasoning. I suspect they may tell you something like that he's an energetic dog who is used to lots of outdoor activity and would feel miserable cooped up in a building. I'm sure that they are not advocating neglect, but the opposite.

For most dogs it seems that being inside is the compromise, and being outside having fun, sniffing around and keeping busy is their preference. (Except for some vulnerable small dogs of course.)

I am really not trying to be rude, but when I first read this I thought you where pulling my leg... Dogs shed, they pee in the house if not trained, and any dog can be obediance trained. If they like it outside better in -30c I would be surprised unless they are huskies.

Honey is a chinook (prt. German, Bernard, and Bernese Mt.) who can never run enough. Oscar is a timid, playful, pitbull/lab mix. I'm not pulling your leg, just saying that outside is better suited for them than inside. Small dogs (like Princess) should stay inside. I agree a hound coat is not well suited for Canada's climate at all, but our dogs are thick furred.

It barely get less than 30 degrees Farhenheit here in the winter and barely over 100 degrees in the middle of summer.They have a cool pool in the summer to cool down in.
