I met our local kennel club for the first time today. And let me say, I am just astounded.

They struck me as a bunch of utter snobs. I surprised them with my knowledge of dogs, so they started chitchatting. It was horrible. They talked about how dog-unfriendly our city was, and sneered at how our city had "nothing but chihuahuas and pit bulls".

One lady actually went on about how if she had her way, she would round up every single pit bull and put them all down. As she put it, "Pit bulls are bred only to kill. That's it. They're walking disasters. I would never let a child get near one."

One lady asked what kind of dogs I had. I told her. She laughed, looked down her nose at me and said, "Oh, if they're not AKC, I don't really care."

And then after this spewing of bull$*!+, they tried to convince me to join! They said that a dog lover like me would enjoy it.

Needless to say, I'm not going to be supporting this kennel club in any way, shape or form. No donations, no fundraising, no attending shows. And to think...I was actually thinking about taking a handling class from them.

Please tell me this is not the norm for a kennel club.

Breedist snobbery is what I've encountered here lately too. They're the foolish ones...too bad though that they carry so much cred with respect to dogs. I have no time for them either or any desire to be affiliated in any way.

Thats sounds a lot like ours local club. I refuse to have anything to do with them.

Apparently in their puppy classes, they teach "down" by holding the leash loose, stepping on the part that is on the ground, and then pulling up so the dog gets pulled down towards your shoe.

nice.

i get the same type of vibes from the kennel club here, too. unfortunately.

you'd think dog lovers would be *dog* lovers, not AKC showdog lovers.

I woudln't join, but I also woudl make sure to tell them why. Send them a letter directly stating your reasons of refusing to join.

AKC can be really snobby sometimes. It's all PUREBRED or nothing to them. I don't have anything against purebreds, just the discrimination. It's like people have predjudice against mutts!

Well the AKC was started to show the quality and straits of a PUREBRED dog! ;)

But also Pits are NOT mutts....so it would be discrimiting a purebred dog?

It isn't so much AKC as it is INDIVIDUAL breed clubs.

I'm sure there are many kennelclubs out there that would be plenty wllling to let a mixed breed into their training classes happily in hopes of educating more people.

And, unfortunately, you will also find kennel clubs like this one.

I have some friends that have 2 pittbulls. The first time I met them the most they did to me was lick me to death. those two are the most friendliest dogs

Ack! What a horrible experience. :( I agree that you should write to them and let them know why you won't be joining.
I'd like to think that your experience was down to the individual people involved not a representation of the entire kennel club, but who knows. From the other posts here it seems like a common thing. :(
It's such a shame. I hope you find a better club or at least somewhere else you can do handling classes.

Cass.

That sucks! It's making me even more nervous about this training club I'm looking at getting into...
