Rehoming Stella

I know how you feel, MyIrishWolfie. I adopted a dog from a shelter about a year and a half ago and we too had her only two months before we had to return her to the shelter. (We named her Minnie). She was going after Daisy. She actually caused my Daisy to need a bunch of stitches in her ear because she ripped it! Daisy was miserable with that dog, and we couldn't keep her any longer. She did go to a rescue through the shelter, though. We were very upset to give her up, I even spent $400 on a trainer. Minnie was a very dominant dog and needed to be the only dog. We would have worked with her counter surfing, on-leash dog agression, and other issues, but we had to think of Daisy. She was terrified of Minnie.

If Binn is miserable with Stella around, it might be best to rehome her. Keep in mind that it will take a loong time to do so. It takes a looong time to rehome large dogs with NO issues! Best of luck to you!

Ah, that sucks. But you do have to do what is best all around for everyone, and if Stella is a one-dog type of dog...forcing her to live with Binn is unfair to both you and the dogs. I hope you can find a good home for her!

I'm sorry to hear you're thinking of giving her up. Have you tried contacting a few trainers, explaining your situation and seeing if they can reduce their rates? I know if someone was truly in a tough financial spot, but really wanted the help, I would offer reduced-rate sessions and I'm sure a lot of trainers think the same way. It's not all about the money for us. Can't hurt to try right?

Maybe the rescue group knows of a trainer or class that is within your budget or even someone who will work with you free? A lot of rescue groups partner up with trainers and they offer reduced-rate sessions in exchange for the extra business.

This is an easy fix with a Prong collar and less dog food.

If she's a danger to your other dog, then by all means, do what you think is best. But many times aggression and the other issues you're talking about can be resolved with proper training. Not always, but many times.

Stella is at her ideal weight.. she's not overweight.. she just big.. but Saint B's are supposed to be big right?

The prong collar would work but its the weight difference between me and her. I weigh less then 100.. she weighs way over 100.. take those two different weights and a dog who's wanting to chase another dog and it isn't a pretty picture.

I am willing to talk to trainers and perhaps get a reduced rate like you suggested.

I've walked 100lb, rowdy dogs on a prong collar before, through high distractions and I'm 110lbs soaking wet. It can be done with proper training.

I said less food becasue you said she was 'fat' in your other post. I wasn't trying to insult your dog.

You do meet the new owner in person using Petfinder. You just request that they are local and interview them in person...

If you don't like the idea of a prong, you can use a halti or gentle leader too. I have a 105lb friend who uses one on her 145lb Great Dane mix, just because she wants to have that extra control over him.
