Advised Reading - The best books?

Well with a new arrival on the way I was just wondering which books would be considered worth getting, as I'm going to go on an Amazon shopping spree! I'm getting How to Raise a Puppy you Can Live With and I also heard The Perfect Puppy : How to Raise a Well-Behaved Dog was good. I'm interested in any puppy raising, house training or positive/clicker training books, or anything others have found useful. Any recommendations?

Put as Number One at the top of your list: "My Smart Puppy" by Brian Kilcommons and Sarah Wilson. It just came out a couple of weeks ago and is absolutely the MOST positive training book I've seen. I've been working through it systematically with Hudson, and I can say that even the first weekend I had the book, my relationship with him improved and we seemed to understand each other better right away. It comes with a 60 minute DVD that is really helpful too. Get it NOW!

I think this is going to be a great thread. I'm going to be organising a Christmas package of English books and DVD's for the kids for Chrimbo and will be sneaking in a book for me. I was thinking of something by Ian Dunbar but just don't know.

Maybe we should gather some author/book names and make a poll?

I am reading Culture Clash (Jean Donaldson, I think?) right now and I am enjoying it. We also have The Other End of the Leash, which my husband is reading.

I'll probably get about 4 books for now, and then add more to my collection. I'm addicted to these books!

Good Owners, Great Dogs is a good book with a lot of great tips and interesting information. I don't agree with everything the author has to say, but for the most part, I really like the book.

^Showpug, I would be interested to know what you disagreed with in that book, as I have it at home. Not looking for a debate, just curious, as it seemed pretty good to me.

There are some negative training methods used, like spraying the dog with a squirt bottle etc. Nothing major, just some stuff I wouldn't do myself. I do like the book though and he has a lot of good information and stories.

The only reason I recommend " How To Raise ,,,," etc is that it is an excellent easy to read and understood book from why to breed , to actually breeding and into what I feel is the MOST important !!!! The whelping pen and the next week by week of what every breeder should do . I feel the puppy testing for what you are buying is great . Plus the rest as the training. Yes, all the books are good reading .... I have many . This book influenced me from the 1st edition years ago ..... even though I had bred for a number of years.... it expanded my knowledge and thus my pups were better off for it . I personally feel this book is number one for anyone thinking of getting a puppy....or thinking of breeding .
