Our vet cracks me up....

Today Rubes had to have a bladder x-ray and a sterile urine sample taken directly from her bladder via syringe. I was holding her straight while our vet, Drew, took the sample.

Side-note - at the moment Drew is hobbling around on a broken ankle, and has not stopped practicing - he carried Ruby into the x-ray on virtually one leg - legend!

Anyway, he jiggled her around a bit on her back, to get her organs all settled (lol) and inserted the needle. When clear yellow urine came up into the syringe on his first try he muttered, `Honestly, I am a god. I just don't think that I get the appreciation I deserve'.

I just laughed out loud - he really cracks me up. And according to us he really is that special, because he's looked after our babies since tiny puppyhood and loves them as much as we do!! If only everyone could have such a wonderful vet!

Hehe that is awesome, sarcastic humor is by far the best kind. he sounds like such a neat guy, hobbling around to take care of your dogs =)

p.s why did ruby need to have an x-ray? is everything ok?

Yep he's great. He disappeared for a couple of minutes and when he came back it was with the clippers - one should never pass up an opportunity to trim Ruby's claws....lol. I must say I've never seen her submit so peacefully!

She has recurring urinary tract infections, and is sometimes incontinent. We thought it was post-spay incontinence but now he's not so sure. She has been on antibiotics again, for the last two weeks, and now she has another UTI, not one week after finishing the medication. So back today for more extensive testing. He said we need to know which one is leading to the other, and what is the underlying cause.

Her x-rays were clear for obvious stones, so now we wait for the sample results to come back.

Poor Rubes!!! I know first-hand what those feel like. Hope the cause can be determined. I wonder if cranberry supplements can help dogs? They help me...

Yeah Mum asked me the same thing, and I really don't know the answer, but I'm wary of giving anything to the dogs that might potentially poison them, and although cranberries might not, I don't want to risk it. Especially if her infections are a symptom of a deeper problem. I hope not. Fingers crossed.

Chester wasn't very happy with her sedation, either. She was unconscious, recovering on the floor of the x-ray room on a big soft towel Drew had laid down for her, and wasn't responding to Chester sniffing advances. So he barked at her. LOL! He hardly ever does that unless he's trying to remind you he's there, or he feels apprehensive. He either thought she was ignoring him, or more likely, was worried about her...poor little man.

I gave Hannah cranberry pills before for her bladder infections. They seemed to work ok but I'm trying to remember if they made her have loose stools or if they were really firm. Also she had a hard time digesting them on an empty stomach so I fed them with her meals.

I would not give anything not sanctioned by the vet. Herbs and things can be poisonous.
