This is a crosspost from a forum I go to.
There is a vet who posts there and he shared with us a dog who was shot. Its believed to have been shot by a deer hunter for chasing off his deer.
Needless to say it has the gundog forum pretty upset!
Wish this poor pup good luck or pray.
Poor guy!!

The next time you feel like shooting a dog while deer hunting while deer hunting cause you think it is "messing" up your hunt or you are just bored and feel like you have to shoot something I want you to remember Bo.

Bo is a 3 yr old male Labrador that was brought to me last night about 8:00pm as an emergency call.

He was shot by some POS deer hunter.

His prognosis is guarded at this point and there is a very good chance that even if he lives he will lose his right rear leg.

Just another example of the morons running around in the woods that would shoot anything it moves, especially after they have had a few Budweisers under their belts....... Maybe they went to the same school of hunting as Dick Cheney. Anyway, I feel sorry for that poor dog.. That really pi$$es me off.....

And that is why we don't want all of humanity to go out in the woods and start hunting their own food! I know a guy that was out turkey hunting and got nailed in the face and neck. Sigh....i am always glad when season is over and everyone can get back to the peace of starve or find food the wild way. IT is such a hard world for all of us.:( prayers for the poor pup.

Shotguns can often leave wounds like that on a person, dog, or any small animal. A bigger animal, like a deer, can handle the blow a little better.

Those wounds look awfully bad. I can't help but think his about his internal organs, do you know if anything else was hurt?

Poor guy. I am all for hunting, but only if you do it responsibly.

He'll be in my thoughts and prayers for sure. Keep us updated!!

Poor baby! I hope he recovers! At the very least...if he has to lose a leg, at least it's a back one; I think dogs do better being 3-legged if they've still got both front legs.

I know a kid that shot a dog (and killed it) because "it kept chasing off the deer and it was a stray". I got so P.O. I punched him..not in the face and it probly wasnt hard seeing I was a girl but he did get a good scaulding more than once, and I told him if he decided to do it again I would report him. But I guess he wont be doing it for along time now seeing hes in jail for child molestation..people..

Another reason dogs should not run free.

And sadly, a lot of hunters will shoot anything that moves, especially if it interferes with their hunt. :(

looks more like an exit wound to me. Bullets usually do not cause huge entry holes. The bullet goes in, expands and blows out the back.
Most def. not a shotgun as there are not burn/pellet marks on the body. Maybe two slugs but i highly doubt that since the dog is stil alive.

Sad that happened to the dog. I hope it was an accident and not on purpose!

Small update...
Finally as an update for those of you who inquired, Bo is doing a little better today and is more alert. However, he has no use of his right rear leg at all and it is not looking good. The prognosis is still very guared. He is bright and alert but very painful. You could not ask for a better patient. Even though he is obivously in a lot of pain, he has never tried to bite or growl when we are working on him but instead tries to lick your hand.

No mention of drinking, it is law in some places that you are allowed to shoot dogs that are running free and chasing animals on your property, and no I doubt he went to the same school as dick cheney, he actually hit what he was aiming at, Slick Dick hit another human, big difference.

Keep your dogs under control and this never would happen PERIOD

Or, he shot at something thinking it was game, which is the more common story and it was a dog instead. At least he didn't shoot someone's child, which also happens quite frequently......

poor dog, such a sweet heart too, in that kind of pain noone woudl blame him for trying to take a bite out of people!
I hope him the quickest recovery.

What if this was a hunting dog? i mean whos to say this poor boy wasnt out with his person doing his job and someone got angry hed disturbed his own hunt and just shot him?!

i hope he recoveres quickly and can go home to a nice warm bed and fenced yard!

yeah everyday apparently in your world, come out and visit the rest of us in the real world. Care to point me in the right direction where hunters are commonly mistaking dogs for game, and children for deer???
