Dogs with squished faces (pugs shih tzus etc) question

Charlie sees to get gunk in his eyes. I have heard that a lot of pugs
need eye drops for there life because of there squished faces
causing some eye issues. Does anyone have there pugs or
shih tzus on eye drops? was it recomended by the vet?

I have noticed a big reduction in the guck in his eyes since we
moved into our house, which is much easier to keep clean and
is less dusty. So that seems to have been a big part of the problem,
but I am wondering if I should get some eye drops at the pet
store for him.

I have done a search on some dog eye drops
online, but the only ones I have come up with where eye
cleaners for stains under the eyes.

I don't use any drops for my Pugs' eyes, but they do get some mondo eye bogies sometimes. My Staffies get them too though. Mostly, I have to watch to make sure the Pugs do not run up onto twigs that could poke their eyes, and my cats wear softpaws to that they do not scratch their eyes.

I use visine in Ripley's eyes since it's so dusty here. I didn't know there were special drops for dogs - are they any different?

Visine is perfectly fine for use. For dogs like Pugs, who seem to have "bug eyes", dry eye can be a problem. That's where products like Visine & Saline Eye Drops come in to help keep the eye lubricated.

However, if you're dog is developing a large amount of "gunk" in the eys on a daily basis, then take it into the vet & have them a) stain the eye for any corneal scratches or ulcers & b) do a test to check the tear ducts to see how they are working.

He seems to be fine ever since we moved, but still seems to get gunk in one eye and not in the other one. I've never had a dog I had total care of before so I was not sure how much is normal.

Good to know you can just use regular eye drops if needed. I know a lot of short faced breeds need them and sometimes he does seem to rub his eyes a bit, so I think I will pick some up.
