I could not agree more! Seeing seomthing like that on a Pit reminds me of the giraffe women in Africa (?), lol.

So in your opinion, these collars look rediculous on my dogs?

Chipper (OEB) with a 2inch collar

Sukari with a 2inch collar

Just a small handful of dogs. However, ALL my dogs either have 1.5inch or 2inch collars. For the hunting dogs, their cut collars are either 3 or 4inches....I don't remember.

I love wide collars :) although with Chloe it wouldnt be possible because all her neck fur would break off...:p so she gets rolled leather...

On a large dog or one with a stocky body type I think 2 inches can looks great! But on dogs that have a smaller frame and some pits are average medium sized dogs...I just think it looks off and uncomfortable.

3 inches is really pushing it for me unless it's on a huge dog. Of course this is just my opinion and if someone wants to use big collars then who am I to say they shouldn't? :)

ALL of my APBTs range in weight from 35lbs to 55lbs. The ones pictured above are 42lbs (Miakoda) & 53lbs (Rex), & 55lbs (Sukari-a rescue). I guess we just have different opinions on what looks rediculous or not. Also, I've had dogs snap 1inch collars in half when they are outside on a tie-out & see a squirrel go running. It's not worth it.

Cut collars for hunting dogs MUST be thick as they are the only protection a dog has from it's throat getting ripped by a hog's tusk. It's not for looks, but for protective purposes.

And jess, the collars made from seatbelt material are absolutely WONDERFUL in the prevention of collar rub. After trying everything, these are the only ones that do well for my dogs.

Of course using this for work is different.

We just have different tastes in what looks good for casual "non-work" collars. I don't think your dogs look ridiculous at all in their collars, I'm just not a fan of that size on a medium dog. I'd prefer to use a 1 inch or 1.5 inch leather collar, but that's just me.

Yes, that's exactly what I said  NO. I did not say that these collars look ridiculous on your dogs. I was talking about 3inch collars (and yes, that 1 inch does make a big difference- at least to me) and so far all I see are 1.5 and 2 inch collars on your dogs. Personally, I just think they suit larger dogs better, that's all.

And I never said that Giraffe-women are or look ridiculous, either, more likely odd (to me) :)

EDIT: Practical use of 3+ inch collars dogs wear for hunting (or other) purposes is a whole different story. I'm talking about the dog that's being walked up and down the street.

Hmm, Miakoda, I don't think your dogs look ridiculous in their collars. Guess it was the 3" collars I was thinking of that look ridiculous. I can understand using them for hog hunting, but I don't see the point of putting them on a medium-sized dog, otherwise.

I wish I could get a picture of Dakota wearing a wide collar. His hair puffs out so much on either side of the collar, it makes him look like a lion. I like hairy dogs, but pretty collars go unnoticed under all the coat.

I agree about the 3inch collar comment. I also agree that even a 2inch is a little to big, that's why I use many of 1.5inch ones as well.

I really think there needs to be a distinction b/n collars for looks & collars for practical purposes. My dogs have those collars for practical reasons. However, many people feel that they must have fashion accessories for their walking fashion accessory & think the oversized, big-n-bad collars look "cool" & will gain their dog some "respect".

And LOL about your dog & his puffy "mane". :D Btw, I've got a Dakota too.

Exactly. Unfortunately, we have a neverending supply of horrible dog owners here, and your typical thugs that get Pit Bulls and expect/train them to be HA. These are the folks that use the collars only as fashion accessories, or to train their dog to strain at the leash nonstop during walks (because it looks tough  )

Your dogs are gorgeous, btw. D'you have a pic of your Dakota? Mine's a little Border Collie.

Mia after seeing those pics 3" does seem a little wide. Maybe Verde will get a 1.75-2" leather collar instead.

As long as the dog is not in any discomfort, I see nothing wrong with a wide collar. People dress dogs up in very whacky things, dye their fur, cut their body parts off, for the sake of fashion, so, I don't see much wrong with a collar. Mine are comfy in theirs. :)
