Thanks Foxywrench for the information....very interesting. My goodness! No wonder your heart is with the Danes. That story shows your devotion even form such a young child. You had nice parents who supported you in that.

lol, doberluv, they wernt realy supporting me...they knew if they didnt say yes i would have gone off with my dog lol. i was a stubborn child and we lived next to a big sports feild with woodland along the back that whent off for miles of trails, i used to dissapear for days into the woods...once i got king i stayed home...i think they realized if they told me to get rid of him id just wander off too, i had plans to join the circus, run off with the gypsies and become a river rat over my early years, King gave me a reason to stay around...

but they are an amazing breed, and when you can look directly in the eyes of a dog like him (we were eye to eye level for a few years lol) you see right into their soul. they truly are gentle giants but dont be mistaken, they are a mastif breed, and king would put himself between me any stranger we came across, especially men, he seemed to know the good and bad people, if a police officer came along he would hold back and sit calmly, if a strange worrysome looking man came along he would stand between us, if the guy didnt back away hed let out a low growl and lower his head.
He couldnt hear a thing but i swear he could read minds! if you have the time and space for those giant lap dogs, it opens your eyes to the world.

i hope one day i find him again in another dane, i belive fully in reincarnation and just know that one day we will meet again...and ill know him when i see him. 11 years is a long time for a dane to "hang around" he knew how much i needed him.

my parents have always thought my "slight" obsession with animals is a litle crazy, but there my life line.
i love my chihuahuas more than anything, there my babies and i cant have kids so they will be my kids forever. but i do miss the pure friendship of my dane.

Stunning. :hail:

Yes, danes typically have short lives, but friends and aquaintances have had danes live well into their teens. I have recently added a new page to my website about golden oldie danes - I have had several entries, and I am awaiting the stories of 4 different danes that have seen their 13th and/or 14th birthdays.

A dear friend of mine had a merle who lived past 14 and has a 13+ dane now.

While it's not terribly common to see danes over 13 to 14, careful breeding is making it more of a likelihood.

In Germany (where Great Danes are the "National Dog" and are highly revered), the life expectancy for a dane is much greater than here in America. Food for thought.

I have an 11 year old dane that will be 12 in May. :)

Danes are in my heart too. I was talking to my sister about our old Sheltie, "Tootsie" (Marionette She's On a Roll), and how much she missed her, and I said, you know, I loved Tootsie, but I don't love SHELTIES. I LOVE danes, I LOVE dobermans, I LOVE mini aussies, breeds that definitely are tied into my life, not just single representatives from each breed.

She has very lovely dogs. :) Am partial to fawn and brindle danes myself. :)

Congrats. That's great news for dane folks. I hear more and more about danes surpassing their "life expectancy". It's music to my ears! :)

No kidding. I was a kid when we got Sarah, and it was purely "by accident" - we were helping her breeder sell a few pups on this side of the border and she sent pups to us to care for - Sarah was one of the first to arrive and we just fell in love. When I was a bit older, I did some research and realized what a short life expectancy they have - I was shattered - I have cherished every second I have had with this girl since she turned 7. She has ONLY GOTTEN BETTER with age, I enjoy her so much as an old girl. She doesn't do *much*, but she never did - potters around the house, scowls at the cats, lays in the sun, sleeps in my bed, sometimes she digs a hole. ;)
