just like any dog can be deaf any colour dane can be born or become deaf however lightly coloured harls and solid whites (harlequin with little to no markings ( primarily occuring in harl to harl breedings) are more than likley deaf and/or blind! i belive something like 95% of solid white danes are either deaf or blind and 20% of those are both, thats why most breeders dont like to breed harlequin to harlequin because of the risk.
some breeders have solid white pups put to sleep because of the high risk of deafness, some BYB either remove them from the mother and let them die or try and charge more for the "Rare white great dane"
My dane was from a BYB who realized when he was 5 weeks old he coudlnt hear, the man was gonna "put him out of his misery" i was 7 and gave the guy 5 pounds (uk) as that was my spending money for the week. the guy didnt care and told me to take him and took my money. I managed to keep the 5 week old pup a secret for about 2 months, and after my parents found out id kept him alive and raised him without them knowing and without their help they said i could keep him as long as i kept it up. I taugh him sign language and my dad helped me make a vibrating collar he had a 100% reliable recall with just a gentle vibration of the collar!!! and by the time he was 2 and i was 9 we were doing therapy dog at a local hospital for children with hearing disabilities!. Ive never met a dog as devoted and inteligent as a dane, and my king although deaf was absolutly no exception!
Safest way to get good harl pups is to breed a harl with a mantle (ive yet to hear of a deaf pup from a harl to mantle breeding) and occasionally breeders will keep merles and "merlequins" who are structually sound (the colour is not recognized) to breed ot their halrs to lower the risk of the harl to harl breedings.
from what i can tell this breeder primarily breeds harl to mantle which is the safest way to breed for harl pups!
her summer 2006 was a harl to harl and if you check out the pups youll see a couple of very lightly marked babies...
