Winter puppy...

I'm getting a Boston Terrier around Christmas and I'm worried about the snow, Ive heard that those dogs cant be in cold weather for long. How do I take my puppy out to play at a park that is covered in two feet of snow? I don't want the puppy destroying my home because hes cooped up all day.
Please if you've had a winter puppy or you have suggestions HHEELLLPP.

Honestly as much as it sucks, housetraining in the winter seems to be easier. They don't want to be out in the freezing cold either so they don't waste time smelling the flowers, they go out, do their business, and come back in.
You won't be able to take the dog to the park and play alot until the snow melt, but you can play in the house to keep the energy level in check.
With a boston you can play fetch down a hallway for a while.
Also make sure you do lots of training sessions, that will keep his/her mind busy and help in wearing the dog out.

I would suggest playing in the house a lot to get the energy out. Also when he has had most of his shots you can put a sweater on him and take short walks--like around the block.

After all shot and things, puppy won't be able to go out till february time anyway!

It I harder for socialisation, I really struggled tofind other puppy dogs out in the cold!!

You will take to it easily, and work out your own routine - if you don't know any different, it won't be harder.

Our puppy has recently decided that he has a never ending supply of energy--we've been walking him 3 times a day and playing a LOT of and he's still ready for more. I guess that means he's healthy?

Anyway, we've been really short on time so we've found other ways to keep him busy. For example, this morning he had a 20 minute walk and then when we came inside...

We busted out the remote control cars. He loves chasing them and will go crazy harassing them until he is completely worn out. He was asleep before we even left the house.

There are plenty of interactive mind stimulating toys available now days. Plus, it's best to let young puppies excercise freely so they can set their appropriate pace and intensity level. It's not a smart idea to take a young pup to a park anyway...especially not until after 4 months old when all their vaccines are completed. You can play games of fetch on the carpet etc. It will work out just fine...

It's not a big deal at all if you get the dog used to things right from the beginning. Take it easy, but don't coddle too much either. Pick a potty spot outside and be consistent. Also teach your dog from early on to go potty on a variiety of surfaces, or you might end up with a dog who will for example only do his business on concrete but not anything else.

This is coming from the person who house trained an 8 week old dachshund puppy in freezing sleet in Germany mid of December. Within 10 days she was pretty much reliable.

I live in Canada and got my dog in February and there was snow until mid may. For me it was great. He wanted to do his business, but he loved the snow. Now I don't have a prissy dog who does not want to step in wet grass, etc, he loves it all, sleet snow, sune, rain etc, he goes out in it all and loves it!

It is also easier house training because you can see in the snow they went, sometimes the males do to much marking! He also did a lot less sniffing around so I did not need to stay out there long. We live in an apartment building, so I had to put on my whole getup every 30 minutes when he was a pup and go outside, trust me if I can do it that way you can!

As for socializing. I tried to keep charlie away from most dogs until he had all his shots. I then started doing to pet stores a lot more for socializing or taking a walk in the snow. We would always run into larger dogs that needed there long walks. Socializing was not that big of an issue for us, but shih tzus are normally very friendly dogs.

My dog is SO prissy. He hates when the ground is wet. He's in for a LONG wet rainy Seattle winter What do you guys think about dog boots for the little guys that don't have the body mass to stay warm like the big dogs do? Is that just a myth feeding into their prissiness?

Glad I could help! Near London isn't to bad since our weather in the winter or pretty mild. I'm originally from north bay and it would probably have been a lot harder these in the winter due to the huge amount of snow and constant cold temperature.
